Falling in Love

Classmates, Colleagues, Couple

They went to the same school, sat through the same classes, and yet spent four years exchanging hardly a word. A real slow burn. Karina and Carter first crossed paths in the halls of the University of Alabama, both studying electrical engineering. She was focused, always on time, headphones in, eyes on the future. He was the mysterious one who only seemed to appear on test days—confident, bright, and occasionally trying to chat with her before class with the kind of persistence that only half-registered in her earbuds. Carter noticed her first. Maybe it was the purple hair, or the way she was always 20 minutes early to class, clearly a smart organized Type A. He tried to be her lab partner, but fate (and a faster classmate) had other plans. He couldn't be deterred so, he kept trying. He chatted with her after exams, tried again at a Burns & Mac recruiting dinner. Even a DM after graduation: “Are you going to work at Burns & Mac in ATL?” She left him unread. For two and a half years. Fast forward to life in Atlanta. Karina had just started her first job and was still settling in when she spotted someone familiar at a company happy hour: Carter. They chatted briefly before he left early. But something about him stood out this time. Maybe it was the bleach blond hair. Or the mustache. Then came the night everything shifted. Bored on a Friday, Carter showed up late to a Braves game with coworkers. The seats were packed, and just as he was scanning for a spot, someone called out, “Hey, you and Karina are friends, sit here!” To this day, they have no idea why he did that. Carter and Karina weren’t really friends, but it remains one of the greatest wingman moves in history. They talked the rest of the game. Not just small talk, but real talk. Music, travel, memories, life in Atlanta. Suddenly the years of one-word answers and missed connections didn’t matter. Something clicked. For the first time, they actually saw each other. From that night on, their lives became entwined. At first, seeing each other only a few times a week. Then always. On one of their first dates, Carter asked, “Do you believe in love at first sight?” Karina said, without hesitation, “No.” He grinned. “Yeah, that sounds dumb anyway.” But maybe—just maybe—it wasn’t so dumb after all.

The Proposal

We thought she didnt know...

His Version Karina said the proposal would be simple. Two requests: her family had to be there, and it had to be sunny. Easy, right? Just fly in her entire family from across the country and ask the biggest question of my life under perfect weather. With refundable flights booked and everyone secretly in on the plan, I told Karina we were heading out for a weekend of camping—one of our favorite things. As tradition goes, we’d stop at a North Georgia winery on the way, grab a glass of wine, sit outside, maybe read a little before heading to the campsite. In truth, our families were already waiting there to celebrate. The week leading up was brutal. The weather changed every hour, flipping from sunshine to storms and back again. The night before, I took Karina on a walk through our favorite park. It was one of those golden-hour evenings—quiet, romantic, perfect. She caught me eyeing her suspiciously and her eyes said, “Don’t do it.” She’s always right (and her sisters might have killed me if I did it without them). On proposal morning, Karina emerged beautifully overdressed, makeup perfectly done—a rarity—so clearly, she suspected something. The drive was tense; her sisters (unsurprisingly) were running late. I forced a pit stop at a random 7/11, frantically coordinating from behind the building as Karina waited, blissfully unaware. When we finally made it to the winery, the clouds broke just long enough for an hour of perfect sunshine. I led her toward an overlook where a picnic basket and champagne were waiting. I took her hands and asked the easiest question of my life. Moments later, the heavens opened again with the fiercest rainstorm I'd ever witnessed, but it didn't matter. The timing had been perfect. It was sunny and our families were there. ======================================== Her Version I had very few requirements for this day, it only needed to be sunny and for my family to be in attendance to celebrate afterwards. I figured I was being low maintenance. Little did I know that almost sent Carter into a weather-induced spiral. We had a camping weekend planned in Cloudland Canyon with my sister, Sierra. I’d even booked two campsites in case friends wanted to join, but one by one, they all bailed. Suspicious. Then Sierra—who is never this agreeable—offered to handle food and even borrow a tarp from a friend. Alarm bells started going off. Carter had also planned a stop at a winery on the way—something that’s honestly one of my favorite parts of camping weekends. We love pulling off into the North Georgia mountains, getting a glass of wine, sitting outside, reading our books, and taking in the quiet. This time, Carter arranged everything: the tasting and a tour of the vineyard. Very on brand, but it all felt a little too coordinated. That morning, I noticed my family had turned off their locations. A bold move since I check those like social media. Carter was “working,” so I drove us, unaware he was actually texting my family to coordinate timing. At the winery, we grabbed a glass and followed one of the owners on a “tour.”As we walked toward an overlook, I spotted something familiar—my family’s picnic basket and noticed a champagne setup. Suddenly, it was quiet. Carter turned to me, took my hands, and got down on one knee to propose. He was so nervous, he forgot to put the ring on my hand. Then, out of hiding came our families—laughing, cheering, hugging us. It was the sweetest surprise. We spent the whole day celebrating and the weekend wrapped in love. And no, we didn’t go camping. Sierra never packed a thing.
