Serena Mendhi & Sangeet

6:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Goodyear
Goodyear, AZ

The Mendhi party is one of the most vibrant and essential of the parties. Mendhi or henna is an ancient form of body art, originating in India. A Mendhi party is the pre-wedding celebration in Sikh and Hindu culture when the bride has the mendhi stain applied to her palms, back of hand, and feet. Typically held a few days before the wedding, the event is casual, with colorful pillows taking place at the bride's and groom's homes. One of the most entertaining functions of Punjabi wedding, the Sangeet night, when excitement for the big day is expressed through song and dance. The evening begins with traditional folk songs called kon's (if you are from the groom's side) and suhaag's (if you are from the bride's side)

Serena Chunni, Maiyan & Choora

12:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Goodyear
Goodyear, AZ

The members of the groom's family visit the bride's household with gifts, jewelry, sweets, and a red colored outfit, along with a red chunni. The chunni is placed over the bride's head, this ceremony is called Chunni Chadana. The Choora is always completed the night before the wedding. This is when the maternal uncles will put the choora (wedding bangles) on the bride by dipping them in milk and water first. The bride wears these as a symbol of being a newly wed. Traditionally 21 red and ivory bangles are placed on each arm followed by kaleeray, which hang from the bangles. Traditionally these were always coconut shaped but nowadays these vary. Milk is then given to the uncles and aunts to drink. The bride is adorned with a red chunni and presented with some gifts from her maternal side.

The Blissful Union. The Groom enters and will be seated facing the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji (sacred holy book) followed by the Bride escorted by her family. The couple and their parents will rise for a short Ardaas (prayer) performed by the Raagi's (priests) invoking the blessings of God. This is then followed by the Laavan.
