It was an unlikely and fateful meeting at a travel conference in Orlando that brought Kara and Ben together in May of 2015. Kara booked an early flight to Florida with every intention to sunbathe poolside before conference activities began. But then her boss (and continued life mentor. Hi Meghan!), asked her to go in her stead to a communications committee meeting during primo pool hours. *Insert big, dramatic sigh* Ben had recently returned from a multi-week business trip to Singapore where he was overseeing his hotel company’s Asian Pacific communications operations until they could hire locally. Exhausted and ready for some quality time back in Minnesota, Ben was not looking forward to this conference. *Insert exaggerated eye roll* Kara walked into the conference room and saw a very handsome man in a finely tailored suit standing near the door. He was speaking animatedly to some colleagues. She caught his eye, smiled and introduced herself. “Hi Ben. I’m Kara. I believe you know my boss Meghan. I’m here in her stead. I’ve got quite big shoes to fill, and really tall ones. (Meghan is notorious for wearing very tall heels).” He laughed. She smiled again, and in true Kara fashion, she gave him her business card. Ben later spotted Kara in the hotel lobby and asked her if she was attending the evening industry event at Sea World. Kara had other plans that night, and was beginning to feel disappointed that she wasn’t going to see that tall, handsome man again (and some orcas). But it rained buckets that night, and the event closed early. Ben courageously emailed Kara that evening with only one line: “You chose wisely :)” And so began the budding of a friendship and courtship. Kara did choose wisely. And so did he.
