How we met

The Handshake Did It

Kamla's viewpoint: A few months after I decided to move back to South Florida, a friend invited me to attend a young professional networking event. I arrived on time only to find out that my friend was running super late. I knew no one else at the function so I thought of leaving...BUT I decided to stay & stand in my own independence. I followed up with the contacts I had met & one of those persons (Jonathan) invited me to an upcoming BBQ. At 1st I wasn't going to attend but decided to after verifying with my friend that I would be "safe" with Jonathan. When I arrived to the BBQ, Jonathan was waiting for me downstairs and in the elevator with him was Matt. I gave Matt a handshake - of which he later teases me on for being the reason we got together. Apparently, I strong-armed him and he couldn't let go. Fast forward -- being that Matt & I were the only 2 new strangers to this weekly gathering, we gravitated towards the other to eat. Through conversation, I was intrigued by him and had a few moments of wishing the other ladies would STOP trying to interject in our convo lol. I was smitten so much so that I snuck a photo of him so that I could send it to my friends. That night, the Miami Heat playoff was taking place. Long story, everyone at the BBQ bailed on showing up to watch the game together & it was just Matt & I at the sportsbar. For 3 hours, he talked without worry of the game. I didn't know what God had planned, but my spirit felt like THIS was my guy. After the game ended, he walked me to my car & we hugged... We started driving home to realize that we lived in 2 developments just opposite the street from each other. I wondered if he would later call & a few days later he did. The rest was years committing to only being together if we had an end goal in mind- marriage being that promise. Thank God for my business degree where my professors required us to know how to give a good handshake. P.s. the shocker - Matt & Jonathan are Godbrothers

The Proposal

I know him all 2 well...

Matt & I have always spoken of marriage including timelines for such. So when 2018 came, we discussed the goal being to get engaged by the end of the year. About 6 months in, one day he told me we were going to go look at engagement rings & after multiple jewelry store sessions together, I gave him the final sign-off on what style I liked. Fast-forward to about a month before he proposed and he tells me that we are invited to a birthday brunch and that the birthday girl wants all the guests to look really nice - photo opps. All sounded legit... BUT then he asked if I wanted to get an outfit, my nails done, make-up, hair done etc. Now to his credit, this is not the 1st time he has asked me if I needed to jazz myself up for a function. But never for someone else's birthday social. That interesting fact mixed with the fact that it was now early November (remember, 2018 proposal promised), my radar went up. So I called my girlfriend and I told her that I was 90% sure this "birthday brunch" was going to be a proposal. Like any smart girl would, I took him up on his offer and went & bought an all-white outfit so that I could be proposed to in my favorite attire color and got my nails done. Fast forward... Matt took me to RH West Palm to their gorgeous rooftop brunch spot... The moment we arrived, I was 100% sure he was proposing as NO one was there to celebrate this apparent bday girl. A few mins after we sat down to wait for his friends (air quotes on waiting for his friends), he said "let's go take a photo". I knew this was the moment so I purposely turned my back to him as I pretended to just want to look out over the balcony. I was waiting for him to have me turn around just to not totally ruin his moment. The moment he tapped me and I saw the ring the 1st thing I said was "I knew it!". Poor kid...I wasn't surprised but at the end of the day, I absolutely love my ring and the man that he is far outshines any dream proposal.
