Situated deep within the season of Scorpio, Halloween is often referred to as a time when the barriers are down between the living and the dead, and when what is commonly agreed upon as reality is unsettled. While tradition has children wearing masks to disguise themselves, there is unmasking that takes place, an unsheathing of the self that resides in the darkness. The season of Halloween is the time when, "death is back at the center of the landscape: that long denied mortality, which makes humans alive." As Scorpio Risings, the bride and groom feel at home in the seasonal aura of decay.
It is not lost on us that the timing for our wedding may appear unusual as our country, and generally our species, goes through the profoundly painful experience of what some refer to as "The Dark Night of the Soul", or a crisis of faith. We do not mean faith in the religious sense, but the faith required to survive. The faith that we will protect one another from harm, that we can rely on one another to survive on a dying planet. There is a psychological importance to being honest about the circumstances we find ourselves in, to embrace negativity in an effort to shine a light on what is truly possibly when we come together to experience joy, pleasure, and love. "It is impossible to subordinate human personhood to the dictates of positivity entirely. Without negativity, life degrades into 'something dead'. Indeed, negativity is what keeps life alive." (Byung-Chul Han) It is precisely this aliveness that we hope to cultivate in the converging of everyones spirits, to celebrate our union amidst chaos.
