How We Met

A Modern Day Love Story

It was Valentine's Day 2020. Kaleb was living in Phoenix and scrolling through Facebook when he came across a post from his cousin, Lindsay. She and several of her friends had celebrated "Galentine's Day" in Dallas. Kaleb felt a spark of interest as he took notice of one of the women in the photo, but quickly put it to rest. After all, what were the odds that particular woman would share a similar dream of moving and working overseas someday? Months later, Lindsay mentioned to Kaleb that she had a single friend who shared similar interests with him - would he like to be connected with her? Her name was Whitney, which Kaleb remembered from the photo back in February. Umm, yes! For years, Whitney had prayed for a husband who would be a godly man with a heart for the nations. Though it was still a desire of her heart to marry, she was excited to take steps as a single person to move out of the U.S. When her sweet friend Lindsay brought up the idea of connecting with Kaleb, Whitney was open to it. At the very least, it would be nice to talk with someone with a similar passion. On September 21, 2020, Kaleb reached out to Whitney via email. Right away her interest was piqued. He was a very good writer, and came across as thoughtful, passionate, and kind. After a few weeks, with some encouragement from his friends (thanks Rachel!), he asked Whitney if she wanted to talk on the phone. Their first phone conversation lasted for hours, and both enjoyed the easy transition between light and deep topics. Phone conversations turned into virtual dates (yay 21st century!), and pretty soon Kaleb was flying to Dallas for the holidays and to meet this woman who was stealing his heart.

The Proposal

March 7, 2021

It took almost no time at all for Kaleb and Whitney to completely fall for each other, so he wrote her a song to tell her he loved her just a few weeks later. Over the next couple of months, they began to realize that they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. After they processed it together and felt the Lord give them confidence to move forward, Kaleb got Whitney's parents' blessing, bought a ring, and started hatching a plan to propose. Kaleb already had plans to fly to Dallas in March, so he secretly changed his ticket to arrive a few days early and surprise Whitney. After throwing a lot of smoke and dodging some close calls, he managed to preserve the surprise with the help of Whitney's mom and sisters. Finally, on March 7, Whitney arrived at the Dallas Arboretum for what she thought was an outing with her sister and a friend, only to find Kaleb waiting for her. After she got over her initial shock, Kaleb took her to a gazebo overlooking the lake and played her a recording of the same song he'd used to first say he loved her. As they danced, the reality that Kaleb was about to propose started to become more and more apparent to Whitney. When the song ended, Kaleb shared a quote from a book Whitney had gifted him and a Bible passage, describing the ways that they embodied his feelings for her. To bring it home, he read a poem that he had written describing his intentions to love and care for Whitney for the rest of his life. The poem's final stanza ended with the million dollar question - "Will you marry me?" Whitney said yes, and the rest is history.
