Pigeon Point is a favorite spot for exploring the tide pools, and this is where Sean proposed to Kailee! Drive 30 miles out of town on the incredibly scenic Highway 1 to reach the historic lighthouse. Parking is free, and this is such a beautiful spot to watch the sunset or stargaze. We hope you love it as much as we do! As the tide rises and falls twice each day, a section of the shore that was underwater becomes exposed to the air, creating the intertidal ecosystem. The creatures that live here are specially evolved to thrive in these demanding conditions, by hiding or hunkering down. Please explore safely and help protect our wild spaces by stepping only on sand or bare rock, and not touching these delicate animals. Check the tide chart for a time where the tide is under 2 feet (or even lower). https://www.usharbors.com/harbor/california/santa-cruz-monterey-bay-ca/tides/#harbor-nav
Sean spent many weekend days in his childhood at Henry Cowell with his family, and it holds a special place in his heart. As adults, Kailee and Sean have hiked and mountain biked together here more times than they can count. This park offers a beautiful escape into the world of giant redwood trees and all who live on the forest floor. Visitors can park near the visitor center before beginning their hike or stroll. This park includes both adventurous trails and the famous ADA accessible Redwood Grove Loop Trail.
Kailee's childhood adventures in Nisene Marks are some of her earliest memories, and were foundational in her pursuing a career in outdoor education. The redwood forest is the most iconic ecosystem in Santa Cruz county and the west coast, home to the tallest tree species in the world. Visitors can park for free on the street and walk in, or pay to drive further into the park before beginning their hike. This park is a great place for folks seeking a more adventurous experience.
Santa Cruz has an abundance of beautiful beaches, and New Brighton was a childhood staple for Kailee and her familia. Walk along the long sandy beach, play in the waves, and maybe spot dolphins, seals, or otters in the water. From the parking lot, visitors can either descend a few flights of stairs or walk down a paved ramp. Pay to park in the lot or ask a local about walking in through the neighborhood.
Sean grew up frequently visiting Natural Bridges with his family and on school trips. Through her recent work as a naturalist, Kailee guided groups of 5th and 6th graders through this park on a weekly basis. Known for the famous sandstone arches formed millions of years ago, Natural Bridges hosts over 10 different habitats (ocean, tide pools, beach, dunes, marsh, cliffs, island, pine grove, eucalyptus grove, riparian zone). The park also has a small museum-like visitor center and a short ADA accessible boardwalk through the monarch grove. Note: June is the off season for viewing monarchs but often a few can be seen in the area year round. Visitors can park on Delaware Avenue and walk into the park or pay to park in the main lot.
Kailee worked as a salesperson at Gayles as one of her first jobs, and it holds a special place in her heart. Gayle's is a very popular restaurant for locals and tourists alike, with a long history and wide menu. Due to their incredible quality and popularity, Gayles can get extremely busy, especially on weekends, but it is so worth the wait! Grab a number when you walk in the door and begin pursuing the hot food, cold salads and sandwiches, and an endless row of desserts! Sean's recommendation: breakfast burrito Kailee's recommendation: Kouign Amann pastry
With cozy vibes, creative drinks, and delicious treats, the Ugly Mug is the perfect place to grab a cup to go or (better yet) sit down to enjoy a good book or a board game. One of our first dates was here at their open mic night, where Kailee performed a song she wrote to Sean for his birthday. Sean's recommendation: Donnie Darko Kailee's recommendation: iced chai with oat milk
Sean's favorite breakfast spot, we have had many a weekend brunch date here. Enjoy their breakfast burritos, bowls, sandwiches, and fresh cinnamon rolls on the outdoor patio. Sean's recommendation: Bene Burrito Kailee's recommendation: Happy HipBEE with sweet potatoes & cinnamon roll
This is one our our favorite spots to eat. They have an extensive menu, including vegetarian and vegan options. Plus, everyone on staff is the kindest ever. Sean's & Kailee's recommendation: pineapple fried rice with tofu and vegetables & spring rolls
