Jake knows Jess is a busy gal - so in order to get some time with her, he knows to get on her calendar. Jess also has a terrible memory so if it's not in her calendar, she will absolutely forget. About a week before the proposal, Jake asked Jess if she wanted to go snowboarding on the following Friday on their local mountain, Steamboat Resort. Well that's an easy "yes", so in her calendar it went! The snowboarding date had arrived and they're getting geared up. They got off the gondola and took the first lap down Buddy's Run where Jess crashed pretty hard, face first. Slow to get up, Jess cried and met Jake at the Storm Peak lift to tell him all about what just happened. Jake thought Jess was going to call it a day but couldn't possibly let that happen. They rode up the lift, Jake asking Jess which lift she wanted to go on next while Jake suggested "Bar UE"? Afterall, it is Jess's favorite lift. A two-seater with tremendous views. Chair 155. They get on and Jess is still oblivious as to what's about to happen. It's two days before Christmas. Jake said "Do you think we'll get to open any presents early tonight?" Jess LOVES opening presents early but Jake never lets her. Jess says "Don't start that with me!" Jake says "Put your hands out" so Jess puts her hands out, thinking Jake was going to give her a piece of chocolate or a tequila shooter. Jake says "Well, take your gloves off. I don't want you to drop it." Jess is STILL oblivious. She takes her gloves off, sets them on her lap on the chairlift and is still waiting for her piece of chocolate until Jake says "Jessica Whalen..." and pulls out the pretty little box while her best friend & photographer was waiting in the trees to capture the most exhilarating moment of their lives. They celebrated with a snowpack hike to Holy Bowl with a bottle of champagne, photos & phone calls to their loved ones. How did Jake keep his cool with a bottle of champagne AND the ring in his jacket without Jess knowing? Patience. Jake always tells Jess, "Patience is a virtue."
