Justin y Mel se conocieron en la Base Aérea de Sheppard, en Wichita Falls, Texas. Estaban en la misma clase de la escuela técnica, pero ninguno de los dos le hablaba al otro… hasta una noche que salieron con sus amigos. Mel estaba bailando con sus amigas y cuando empezó a sonar Neon Moon, Justin juntó el valor suficiente para invitarla a bailar. Desde ese momento, fueron inseparables. Todo esto pasó unas cuantas semanas antes de su graduación. Mel tenía órdenes para ir a la Base Aérea de Beale, en California, y Justin se dirigiría a la Base Aérea de Ellsworth, en Dakota del Sur. En los días previos a la graduación, tuvieron muchas pláticas sobre si querían continuar con la relación o no. Al final, ambos decidieron que lo mejor sería dejarse ir y permitir que cada quien explorara su nueva base. Llegó el día de la graduación: se tomaron muchísimas fotos juntos y, como si el destino quisiera darles más tiempo, una tormenta de nieve los obligó a quedarse en los dormitorios una semana extra antes de partir a sus respectivas bases. Cuando por fin llegó el día de la despedida, toda la clase se dijo adiós y, al llegar al aeropuerto, fue ahí donde Mel y Justin decidieron intentar una relación a larga distancia. No fue fácil conocerse a fondo a través de FaceTime, pero lograron salir adelante. Y justo cuando todo parecía acomodarse, Mel recibió órdenes para ¡Ellsworth! Estaban súper emocionados y no podían esperar para crear muchos recuerdos juntos, hasta que alguien… olvidó actualizar su dream sheet y recibió órdenes para Alaska. Por suerte es relativamente fácil conseguir órdenes a Alaska. Así que se fueron rumbo a Alaska y en el camino tuvieron la oportunidad de conocer Canadá. Fue un año largo adaptándose al lugar, pero cuando llegó el verano, hicieron un viaje increíble a San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato. Mientras recorrían la ciudad en un día perfecto y soleado, un mariachi tocaba frente a la catedral. Mel quiso que tocaran una canción de Vicente Fernández, ya que Justin ama su música. Lo que ella no sabía era que, en ese momento, Justin se arrodillaría y le pediría que se casara con él!

Justin and Mel met at Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, TX. They were in the same tech school class, but neither spoke to the other until a night out with their friends. Mel was dancing with her friends and when Neon Moon started playing, Justin had the courage to ask Mel to dance with him. Since then, they were inseparable. This was a few weeks before their graduation and Mel was heading to Beale AFB, CA and Justin was headed to Ellsworth AFB, SD. Days leading up to their graduation, they had many talks about whether they wanted to continue the relationship or not. At the end, they both decided it'd be better to just let each other explore their new bases. Graduation day comes, they take lots of pictures together and a snow storm hit so they were stuck in their dorms for an extra week before they went to their different bases. Departure day comes, and the whole class says their goodbyes and when they arrived at the airport, that is when Mel and Justin decided they wanted to try long distance. It was rough learning about each other through facetime but they managed to push through and that is when Mel got orders to Ellsworth! They were excited and couldn't wait to make a lot of memories when someone.... forgot to update their dreamsheet and got orders to Alaska. Thankfully, it is super easy to get orders to Alaska (now we know why, it's been a month of -30 and -40 degree weather) and they set off to Alaska and got to explore Canada! It was a long year of getting used to the area but when the summer came, they had a great trip to San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, MX. While they were exploring on a perfect, sunny day, June 26, 2025, a mariachi was playing in front of the cathedral, and Mel wanted them to play a song by Vicente Fernández because Justin loves his music. Little did she know, he would get down on one knee and ask her to marry him!
