One afternoon, Justin sat outside a busy coffee shop, working quietly as the steam from his coffee drifted into the air. Inside, every table was taken, the sound of chatter and clinking cups filling the room. Ilianushka Sadie walked in, looking for a seat. There was only one left… Outside, right next to a boy with bright blue eyes and a big, warm smile. Her heart raced. Instead of walking up to him, she stepped back outside and decided to take a walk around the block to calm her nerves and practice what she might say. On her first pass, she headed straight toward him. He looked up and smiled, that smile made her heart race. In her nervousness, she passed him right up, continuing around the block again. She wandered slowly this time, her thoughts tumbling over one another. What do I say? How do I say it? She passed shop windows, catching her reflection, rehearsing the line in her head. The second time around, he looked up again. This time with the faintest expression of anticipation, as though he expected her. She drew a steady breath, ready to ask, May I sit with you and drink coffee as I read my book? But just as the air left her lungs, a seat opened up inside. She stepped past him toward the door, tossing a quick compliment over her shoulder, “You have nice hair.” Fifteen minutes later, Justin appeared inside, scanning the room until his gaze found hers. Something unspoken passed between them in that glance, a spark, a silent dare. He returned outside, the thought of her lingering until he could no longer sit still. Pulling a scrap of paper from his notebook, he wrote a few words, folded it, and walked back inside. But she was gone or so it seemed. Her book and phone still rested on the table, silent witnesses to her brief absence. He tucked the note beneath her book, hoping she’d see it. Moments later, she stepped outside again. The seat next to him was still empty. This time, she didn’t hesitate. She sat, meeting his eyes with a smile. “Hello, Justin,” she said softly. “My name is Ilianushka.” And from that moment, their story began.
4 “Haven’t you read,” Jesus replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
