Nico and Julia first met at a pool party, in typical Miami fashion, in the summer of 2014. They became friends and collaborated in several medical student organizations prior to starting to date on Cinco de Mayo 2015. Nico introduced Julia to his parents a LOT sooner than she expected, before they had even decided to "officially be boyfriend and girlfriend". They spent many weekends hanging out between Miami and Delray Beach while Julia did her 3rd year of medical school at the regional campus in Palm Beach County, and Nico completed his second year of medical school in Miami. When Julia decided to spend a year working with a global surgery group, splitting her time between Boston, Brazil, and India, they had their first, but not last, taste of long distance. They were reunited as 4th year medical students in Miami and graduated together in 2018. Before starting residency, they took a spectacular trip to Southeast Asia, visiting Thailand, Cambodia, and Northern Vietnam. Please ask about this trip if you are thinking of visiting! Nico went on to an anesthesia residency in the Bronx, NY and Julia started general surgery residency in Chicago, IL, for what looked like a four-year stint of long distance. A stoke of luck and serendipity meant Nico was able to transfer to the University of Chicago and join Julia on the south side in July 2020, after only two years apart. They became parents in November 2020 when they adopted the crazy, rambunctious, adorable Chase (their cat, see below). They continue to live happily on the south side of Chicago, Nico in his final year of anesthesia residency with plans to start a cardiac anesthesia fellowship program in July, and Julia with an additional 3 years of general surgery residency prior to entering into fellowship.
