By car (via ferry) or by plane! The ferry boat accommodates vehicles of all sizes, as well as passengers without cars. See our Travel page for details on how to book with Steamship Authority. Boats regularly fill up, so book early! The Vineyard has one airport (MVY). Boston is the closest major city to which one can otherwise fly and rent a vehicle to drive on the island.
Some groups are renting houses via sites like AirBnB and Vrbo; this is favorable if you wish to stay Up Island in Aquinnah or Chillmark as there are few hotels in this area. For those staying Down Island, our welcome event is within walking distance to most hotels in Edgartown. The ceremony/reception venues are around a 35-40 minute drive from this area, depending on the town you choose to stay in. Visit our travel page for a list of hotels with which we're familiar!
"Up Island" refers to the geographically west areas of Chillmark and Aquinnah (where we're getting married). "Down Island" refers to the geographically east areas of Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, and Vineyard Haven (where the major ports and towns on the island are located).
If you want to bring your car to the island, you'll have to book a ferry reservation well in advance (see Travel page with Ferry information). If you're flying or ditching your car on the mainland, you can get around via Uber or local taxis. Transfer can be a bit spotty up island where we are getting married, so we usually recommend pre-booking a cab through any local company for the end of the night. There is public transit that goes from any major town to the Gay Head Lighthouse which is where our ceremony will take place, so this is also a great option. If you want to rent a car on the island, we recommend using Turo for the best prices.
