Travel

Getting to Orcas Island is part of the journey. Whether you arrive by plane, car, or ferry, you’ll experience the beauty of a Pacific Northwest summer along the way. Orcas is incredibly special to us, and we can’t wait to share it with you. If your schedule allows, we encourage you to stay for an extended weekend to experience more of everything the San Juan Islands have to offer. We know many of you will be traveling from out of state, and we’re so grateful that you’re making the trip to celebrate with us. As local experts, Julia and Gunnar are more than happy to help you find the travel plans that work best for you. Please text either of us anytime with questions!

Flight

If Flying from the Bay Area

We recommend flying nonstop on Alaska Airlines from SFO to Paine Field in Everett. This smaller airport offers an easy arrival experience and puts you about a 75–90-minute drive from the Anacortes ferry terminal. From Paine Field, you can rent a car at the airport and drive onto the ferry, or reserve a seat on the Bellair Airporter Shuttle to the terminal and walk aboard. If you plan to explore Orcas Island, we strongly recommend renting a car.

Flight

If Flying from Sacramento or Redding

We recommend flying nonstop on Alaska Airlines from Sacramento or Redding to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Sea-Tac is approximately a 2-hour drive from the Anacortes ferry terminal, depending on traffic. From the airport, you can rent a car and drive onto the ferry, or reserve a seat on the Bellair Airporter Shuttle to the terminal and walk aboard. If you plan to explore Orcas Island, we strongly recommend renting a car.

Flight

Want to Skip the Drive + Ferry?

For the quickest and most scenic route to Orcas Island, consider flying with Kenmore Air. The short 40–45 minute flight takes you over the Puget Sound and directly to the island, allowing you to bypass the drive to Anacortes and the ferry altogether. Choose a landplane flight from Boeing Field to Eastsound Airport or a seasonal seaplane flight from Seattle. Flights currently start around $200 per person, each way. Kenmore Air also offers a shuttle connection from Sea-Tac to Boeing Field. Be sure to arrange a rental car or local transportation on Orcas in advance.

Travel Note

Ferry Information

The ferry may be unfamiliar, but we promise it is much simpler than it sounds. You’ll drive to the Anacortes ferry terminal, park in a designated lane, and drive your car directly onto the boat. Once aboard, you can step out, grab a snack, and enjoy the beautiful ride through the San Juan Islands before arriving on Orcas. If you’re bringing a car, you’ll need a vehicle reservation for both your trip to Orcas and your return to Anacortes. The reservation is free and simply holds a place for your car on a specific sailing. Ferry tickets are purchased separately. Walk-on passengers do not need reservations, but we recommend bringing a car so you can easily explore the island. Reservations are released in phases, so don’t worry if your preferred sailing is not available right away. Additional spaces become available two weeks and two days before each travel date. The biggest thing is choosing a ferry that gives you enough time to reach Anacortes without rushing. Please text Julia or Gunnar before booking. We would be more than happy to help you choose the best sailing for your flight or travel plans and help you navigate the reservation process. On your travel day, plan to arrive at the Anacortes terminal 45–60 minutes before departure.

Rental Car

Getting Around Orcas

If you are flying directly onto the island or walking onto the ferry, rental cars are available on the island through Orcas Island Rental Car and OrcasCars.com. Both offer convenient pickup options, but availability is limited during the summer, so we recommend reserving well in advance. Taxis and shuttles also serve the ferry terminal and locations throughout the island. Rides should be arranged ahead of time whenever possible.
