We met spontaneously on a music subreddit (r/listentothis), started chatting, and became fast friends. After a couple in-person visits, in February of 2016 we decided to take the plunge into dating long-distance until Julia graduated from the University of Toronto. She had two requirements: 1) stop smoking and 2) move to California. Julia moved to New York in April of 2017, Andrew proposed in May, he took the California bar exam in July, and we took a long road trip out west at the end of October.
The engagement didn't come as a surprise – he'd said he wanted to get married in 2018 and I had agreed that that sounded like a great idea. But the proposal was completely unexpected! I'd told him nothing in public or on vacation, and that my parents had gotten engaged on the couch at home. He went off to work one morning, then came home for a late lunch...a little sunburned. It was odd, but I didn't dwell on it. That night we were settling in to watch some Frasier and he came over with a cheese platter. I was about to dig in, but he said to hold on, there was one more thing. "Uh, no, everything is here," I said in response. When I looked up, he was down on one knee, asking me to marry him with the most beautiful ring. I don't think he got the words out before I said yes! As for the sunburn? He'd spent over five hours waiting outside the apartment for the ring to be delivered. I found a gouda one.
