Jui and Deep met under unlikely circumstances. They found themselves, initially separated 720 miles, connecting through an app with over 35 million users during the height of a global pandemic. She was about to begin her hardest rotation of her intern year, while he was a busy University of Florida chief resident navigating a program through the pandemic. Neither knew what to expect before their first virtual meeting, but often the best discoveries are serendipitous. Conversation flowed easily and simply never stopped. As they shared witty banter, memes, and YouTube videos over the next few months, they found something precious: companionship. In June 2021, Jui and Deep met in her hometown of Florence, AL. Their meeting was surreal: a culmination of months of conversing over black and blue iMessages with occasional FaceTimes. But face to face, they felt familiar and yet unknown to each other. Over the next several months, they explored each other's cities while growing to understand each other deeper. Deep showed Jui first experiences not only in cities she had seen, but also in other places they had never been previously. Meanwhile, she took the honor of introducing him to Birmingham’s finest delicacy: Steel City Pops. In October of that year, Deep briefly voyaged to India. Before he even boarded the plane, Jui had sent him a care package (he would soon learn that there would be more of these to come at his mailbox...), which included kind offerings to Deep's grandparents. He soon returned stateside, visiting Jui in Memphis, and the two knew that they had a relationship worth committing to. Deep described his feelings towards Jui by creatively using her favorite snack: popcorn. Through each new experience, triumph, and laugh, their love, respect, and trust in each other strengthened like a sapling growing into a wide-branching Angel Oak. In February, two days after Jui’s birthday, Deep arranged for both their families to visit in Memphis. On top of the Memphis Pyramid with the sunset reflecting off the skyline and the Mississippi River, Deep proposed to an overjoyed Jui. “You raise me up,” he said as he slipped the engagement ring onto her finger. She looked deeply into his eyes and said, “You are my home and my greatest adventure.” And the rest is Kismat (fate).
