Judy and her friend Wendy went on a hiking trip to Mount Mitchell. During their hike they found themselves talking about life, family and other things on their hearts. With rising feelings, they decided that they weren't just going to talk about some of these things, but that they were going to pray and make declarations over them. On that day, Judy prayed for her husband and she prayed that she would meet him soon. At that time, Mark was living with his friend, Abbey. Abbey's health and independence had quickly diminished due to an aggressive cancer. Mark helped out as his home aid for a season, -since Abbey's wife was still living in China. Mark also finally found himself praying vigorously for a wife.
Judy and Mark agreed to meet for the first time by going for a dog walk, at the American Tobacco Trail in Durham. It was a nice warm morning for January, and they decided to go on a stroll outside because it was still during the height of the pandemic. Judy was waiting for Mark as he pulled up, in his "full-of-character" pick-up truck, with his dogs riding in the back. Mark rolled out of the truck with dog leashes on hand. Judy was immediately impressed by Mark's big smile, his deep laugh and warm demeanor. They headed for the trail with the conversation flowing very smoothly and easy. They talked about family, jobs and even past relationships. They walked for over an hour, when the weather quickly turned and the wind got chilly. They stopped at a breakfast shop to get warm biscuits and hot coffee. Even then, Judy couldn't get herself to warm up. Mark kindly, offered Judy his leather jacket. She politely declined the offer, but he insisted. After seeing him take it off, she finally accepted the gesture and put it over herself. Fitting more than "just a little" too big, she was still happy it was keeping her warm from the chilly wind. They headed back to the parking lot and Mark took his shot with a quick joke that went right past his intended target: "If your hand is cold, I could hold it for you." Judy replied "Oh no, but thanks -this coffee I'm holding is still warm." They both had prior commitments to attend and had to part ways, but neither one really wanted to leave. It was love at first sight.
They were now officially dating and Mark wanted to introduce Judy to one of his favorite hobbies; hiking and camping! Mark invited Judy to go to the mountains. Judy had hiked and camped before, but she was still very much an amateur. However, she loves the outdoors and she was up for an adventure. They set camp in a patch of wilderness near Black Mountain Campgrounds at the foot of Mount Mitchell, which is the tallest peak on the East Coast. They arrived a little later than they hoped, but they quickly set their camp beside a little stream and headed up the mountain. The trail is a steep and strenuous hike, 6 miles straight-up to the summit. They were half way up the mountain trail when they realized that they were going to run out of daylight hours. Reluctantly, they decided to turn around. The following day they set out again to hike up the mountain. This time, they had all of their gear with them. They had planned to beat the rain and set up shelter half way up the hill, but the rain and even light hail suddenly surprised them as it quickly came over the mountain. Judy and Mark, along with the dogs and all their gear got completely soaked. They decided to head home, drenched and a little disappointed, but still eager to come back again sometime to finish the trail!
Judy and Mark headed back to the Black Mountain Range determined to finish the hike they had started up Mount Mitchell. However, the aftermath of a recent hurricane had left half of the west side of the state flooded and inaccessible to hikers. This included the bottom entrance to the State Park from Black Mountain Campgrounds. They adapted their plan, and instead drove to the top of the mountain and started hiking down. They hiked until they found open ground. It was a beautiful meadow full of tall grasses, wild yellow flowers and buzzing bees. They set camp and headed out again. After a few hours of hiking down the side of the mountain, they encountered a stream of water that runs through the trail on the mountain. This was the halfway point they had reached in their first attempt back in March. The stream is wide and a few inches deep. It is a beautiful clear pool of water where crayfish can be seen swimming. Mark asked Judy to step into the middle of the pool. As Judy walked into the open space, Mark got down on one knee, pulled a beautiful diamond ring from his pocket and asked Judy to marry him. Judy was overwhelmed with tears of joy and said "Yes!". Later, Mark and Judy reflected on their engagement, remembering Judy's prayer for a husband in 2020 (while at Mount Mitchell), and the 3 interrupted-attempts, before the couple got to see the whole trail together. The couple really believes that God wanted to show them something; how we should trust, knowing He might lead us in odd paths before finally getting us to our hopeful destination.
After much thought and prayer, Mark and Judy decided to exchange their nuptials vows in an intimate ceremony in the backyard of their new Mebane home.

Se detuvieron en una tienda de desayunos para comprar galletas calientes y café. Pero Judy no lograba calentarse y cubrirse del frío. Mark, muy amablemente, le ofreció a Judy su chaqueta de cuero. Ella declinó cortésmente la oferta, pero él insistió. Después de verlo quitárselo, finalmente aceptó el gesto y se lo puso encima. Le quedaba más que un poco demasiado grande, estaba feliz de que la mantuviera abrigada del viento frío. Regresaron al parqueo y Mark disparó con una broma rápida que pasó justo por encima de su objetivo: "Si tu mano está fría, podría sostenerla." Judy respondió: "Oh, no gracias, este café que tengo me está calentando." Ambos tenían compromisos previos para asistir y tuvieron que separarse, pero ninguno realmente quería irse. Fue amor a primera vista.
Ahora estaban saliendo oficialmente y Mark quería llevar a Judy a uno de sus pasatiempos favoritos, ¡ ir de excursión a pie y acampar! Mark invitó a Judy a ir a las montañas. Judy había hecho excursiones a pie y acampado antes, pero todavía era una novicia en el deporte. Sin embargo, le encanta el aire libre y estaba lista para una aventura. Acamparon en un área desierta cerca de Black Mountain Campgrounds, al pie del monte Mitchell, el pico más alto de la costa este. Habían planeado vencer la lluvia y acampar a la mitad de la colina, pero la lluvia e incluso el granizo los sorprendieron repentinamente cuando venía sobre la montaña. Judy y Mark, junto con los perros y todo su equipo se empaparon por completo. Decidieron regresar a casa, empapados y un poco decepcionados, ¡pero aún ansiosos por regresar en algún momento para terminar el camino!
Judy y Mark regresaron a Black Mountain Range decididos a terminar la caminata que habían comenzado la vez pasada. Sin embargo, las secuelas de un huracán reciente habían dejado la mitad del lado oeste del estado inundado e inaccesible para los excursionistas. Esto fue más allá del punto medio que habían alcanzado en su primer intento en marzo. El arroyo es ancho y de unos centímetros de profundidad. Era una hermosa poza de agua clara donde se pueden ver cangrejos de río nadando. Mark le pidió a Judy que se metiera en el centro de la piscina. Cuando Judy entró al espacio abierto, Mark se arrodilló, sacó un hermoso anillo de diamantes de su bolsillo y le pidió a Judy que se casara con él. Judy, con lágrimas de alegría en sus ojos, dijo ¡sí! Más tarde, Judy y Mark reflexionaron sobre su compromiso, recordando la oración de Judy por un esposo en 2020 en Mount Mitchell, y los 3 intentos interrumpidos antes de que la pareja pudiera ver el camino completo juntos. La pareja realmente cree que Dios quería mostrarles algo; cómo debemos confiar, sabiendo que Él podría guiarnos por caminos extraños antes de llevarnos finalmente a nuestro destino de esperanza.
Después de mucho pensar y orar, Mark y Judy decidieron intercambiar sus votos nupciales en una ceremonia íntima en el patio trasero de su casa en Mebane.
