Yes, children are allowed. However, please keep them calm during the ceremony. We are going to do a crazy hour at our wedding, so we do recommend the children who get fussy, should go back to their hotel room or to a room on the venue.
We will be providing hotel blocks or venue stay for two nights, 8/15 and 8/16. We will also be providing shuttle buses to and from the venue and hotel. If you want to get your own Airbnb, hotel, or hostel, that's fine too! Please just keep us informed.
You should start tracking ASAP! Buy the tickets when it hits it's low point. Round trip tickets are usually $350-500. You should be arriving at El Dorado International Airport (BOG). Please arrive by 8/15, the day before the wedding, because we plan on having a welcome party. Arriving day of, 8/16, is NOT acceptable. Bridal party and groom party can arrive the day before the wedding.
Yes, Colombia is safe but as with any foreign country, you should remember YOU ARE A TOURIST! Follow these tips to have a good time: - Keep your phone hidden and use it only in stores or in a group - Be aware of your surroundings - Look both ways when crossing the street because there are a lot of mopeds and bikes - Wear a fanny pack or bags with no brand names please! Not even Coach! - Only carry essentials in your fanny pack (ID, credit card, small cash for street vendors) - If you don't feel comfortable, always say NO - Avoid talking to strangers and don't accept gifts - Don't do anything stupid - Always check online before going to neighborhoods or new locations (this way you can keep your phone hidden) - Have your location ON and share it with someone in the states
- If you haven't done so already, check the expiration date on your passport! If it's close to expiration, I would renew it ASAP! - Check your phone company to see what you need to do to access international calling or wifi while abroad. - Bring two credit cards, one you will use the most often and one as backup. Make sure to bring the credit cards that don't have foreign transaction fees. Would highly recommend you DON'T bring your debit card. Take out the cash that you think you will need and bring it to Colombia. - Visitors coming into and leaving Colombia must fill out an online Check-Mig form before arriving to the airport. (https://apps.migracioncolombia.gov.co/pre-registro) - Download the Bogota map so you can use it offline/with no wifi, if needed. - *OPTIONAL* Make a photocopy of your passport to put in your wallet so that the real passport can stay in the hotel, where it is safe.
As a tourist, we would recommend taking only Ubers. If you have cash, you can take the local taxis, but Uber is preferred because it can be tracked.
Juan and Helen are exploring Bogota with our guests for 3 days and then 3 days in Cartagena (another city). We will travel for about a week after the wedding. This is NOT our honeymoon, so feel free to join us! If you choose to join us, YOU are covering your own expenses. For example, if we choose to do an Airbnb/hotel, we are splitting that cost among whoever is coming. Same goes for excursions and food. If you want to join us, please let us know, so we can get a list going. We know that some of our guests are using the wedding as the starting point of their travels or the end point. Either way, we would be excited, if you choose to join us!
Currently the rate is 1 USD = 4000-4500 PESOS. Everything in Colombia is extremely cheap! For example, a 12 min Uber ride with tip is around $2.65 and a 27 min Uber ride with tip is around $11.89.
It's chilly and windy in the mountains and the venue is by the mountains. In the city, it's warm like spring. Think short sleeves, long pants and a windbreaker/jean jacket. However, if we go to Medellin or Cartagena, the weather is very different so please check the weather app.
Bogota tends to smell like gasoline due to all the mopeds and bikes. We would recommend a mask if you can't stand the smell of gasoline in the air. In the mountains, where the venue is located, the air is much cleaner.
Not everyone struggles with altitude sickness. It really depends on your body. According to Juan, if you are more active, you will have a harder time breathing in certain areas of the city or higher up on the mountains. If you have asthma, BRING YOUR INHALER!!
We highly recommend Zona Rosas but you can do your own research. Make sure the place you go to is safe. Always bring a buddy.
Don't go towards the colorful houses. You will have a lovely time but you won't come back. This is because it is NOT a safe neighborhood.
