Travel Note

Our Travel Recommendations for Non-Midwesterners

First: Champaign-Urbana (CU) is NOT in or near Chicago! It is 2 hours away. CU has an airport, though it is very small and flies direct only to Chicago and Dallas. There are a few travel options, each with pros and cons. I (Alex) have lived here for five years and still can't decide on the best way to get to and from Connecticut. Here are some options, but your choice will depend on how much you like driving, whether you want to spend time in Chicago, and the two quantities that rule the world: money and time. I would most recommend: 1) Flying into Chicago and a) either getting a rental car at/near the airport b) or taking the Amtrak Train to Champaign Station. 2) Flying into Indianapolis and getting a rental car. The Amtrak runs between CU and Chicago a few times per day and can sell out/increase in price as available tickets dwindle. It's $17 each way if you reserve early enough. It's very comfortable and you can get to Union Station (where it departs) from both airports. Both the Blue and Orange Lines (el trains) will take you from O'Hare and Midway to Union Station downtown in about an hour. You will want to factor in the time you expect it to take for you to leave the airport and 30 mins for finding the Amtrak terminal once you're in Union. If you want to spend time in Chicago proper, not having a rental car (and using public transit) could be easier and cheaper than finding parking. O'Hare airport is a 2:15 drive from Urbana. Midway airport is 2:08. Driving times can increase if you're in Chicago during rush hour traffic. Another good option is flying to Indianapolis Airport, which is a 1:50 drive away. Finally, to all the people who live far away: we'd love to have you here, but we understand if it doesn't make sense for you to come. It's a small city that's not that close to a big city. We love CU, but if the timing or the distance don't work, we can find ways to celebrate the next time we're physically closer.
