Jorge and I met in high school. He, a creative and handsome introvert. His friends would call him funny and an astute people watcher. He wasn't your average Joe, but loved to go unnoticed so he could observe. Me, Miss Outgoing! I know everyone and everyone knows me. extracurricular activities was my middle name, especially music. I never noticed him noticing me. He always smiled wide when I looked over my shoulder at him. Why oh why didn't I catch on and notice the Guatemalan cutie sitting behind me? The incident that literally had our worlds colliding happened. I was late because of practice and came rushing in to class so that I could talk to my girlfriends about Senior Prom. I dropped all the books in my hand and papers flew everywhere. Then like magic there he was. Bounding to my rescue, saving all my papers and books. I smiled and blushed and we stood up and locked eyes and the embarrassing thing you can't imagine happening as a teenager happens. Our entire class is watching us have this moment. This I want to kiss you now moment. This we're too young for this kind of intensity moment. Our teacher clapped her hands together to snap us out of it . Our peers cheered as we took our seats and I was red faced. I could feel it. I couldn't bring myself to look at him but I looked back and there it was, that big gorgeous smile. The one that years later would melt my heart and leave me speechless. Unbeknownst to me, He and I had the same route home. Jorge would later tell me, that when he finally got his nerve up to ask me to prom, I got off the bus at an unfamiliar stop and he waited to take the train back to find me, but I was gone. When Senior prom came, I was sitting with my date and Jorge says to him without breaking our gaze "Take care of her, she's something special." Fast forward to 2008 when Facebook was the hottest thing. He sent me a friend invite which I accepted. His first message said "I've been looking for you for 10 years." I've been his ever since.
December 25, 2016-Jorge Surprised me by planning a trip to see my parents in South Carolina. We were going to be gone for a week so I assisted him with all of the packing. I hadn't been home in a while so this was a treat to see my parents and my favorite Aunt who happened to be in town as well. (Still trying to figure out how I missed him packing the ring) I should have known something was up because everyone was acting so strangely, however it never dawned on me what was happening. As my mother prepared Christmas dinner, Jorge asked if we would all gather outside on my parents deck for a family photo. I stood in the middle with my parents on either side of me and my cousins and my sweet brother there. I was literally surrounded by my loved ones. As Jorge "took the picture" One of our songs "Unforgettable" by Nat King Cole began to play. This struck me as odd since Jorge it a techy guy and the fact that he was pretending to not know how to work his phone was strange but understandable since the phone was new. There with all the stars on full display in front of my family and friends with this beautiful song playing, he told my family that he was not an easy man to love, and only the woman that was made for him would be able to do it....At this point, listening to his beautiful words, my eyes welled with tears and I couldn't hold them back. Jorge dropped to one knee and asked me to marry him. I ran to him, shocked, elated, ,crying and shaking all at the same time. I said yes. The moment could have not been more special or wonderful and the fact that he asked my parents for my hand in marriage ( which I found out later) made this moment more special. Christmas was my favorite holiday anyway, but now I have more of a reason to love it. HE was my best Christmas present....
