How We Met

We first met a little over ten years ago on twitter. I lived in Portland, Oregon and Lucas was at school in Syracuse but is from Rochester. Lucas went to high school with a girl named Jordan Anderson and followed me thinking it was her. He quickly realized his mistake, but started tweeting (?) at me anyway, which quickly moved to DMs, then texting, and then FaceTimes/phone calls. Shortly after that, I was diagnosed with leukemia and had to start treatment immediately. Even though he was across the country, Lucas showed up for me everyday and made sure I knew I wasn't alone. Luckily, I responded well to treatment and was able to graduate high school and go to college as expected. We continued to talk every single day, but still hadn't met in person. Unfortunately, during my sophomore year I was diagnosed with leukemia for a second time, and now needed a bone marrow transplant. Again, Lucas was my rock and made sure I smiled every day, even on my worst days. Thankfully, I made it through treatment with very few complications and was able to return to college. At the time I was majoring in Sports Business, and got accepted to go on a trip to a conference in Boston. We decided it was time we met in person, so Lucas drove from Corning, NY (where he was working at the time) to Boston while wearing a suit because he knew I liked it when he dressed up. We only had a few days together but they were perfect, and the pit in my stomach I had after he left made me realize a move was in order after I graduated college. After we met each others parents, I told my family that I think I needed to move to New York. They understood and were completely supportive, because they knew everything Lucas had got me through and how much we loved each other. So my mom, Harrington and I packed up my Honda Civic, and drove across country from Portland to Corning so we could start our lives together. Fast forward a few years, I decided I wanted to go back to school for nursing. Lucas was so supportive and took on being the sole earner for our house while I commuted from Corning to Rochester every day for school. He quizzed me, let me do my practice nursing assessments on him, and even took on my crazy nursing school friends as his own. After I graduated and accepted a job, we moved back to Rochester. Fast forward again to our 10 year anniversary. I always knew that when Lucas proposed, it wouldn't be a genuine surprise. I recommended we go to Niagara Falls because I had never been to the Canadian side. I picked the restaurant we were going to celebrate at. So naturally, I was shocked when we proposed while we stood and looked at the falls. I had no clue, he made sure it was a genuine surprise. He made sure to ask my parents only a few days prior, because he knew that they wouldn't be able to keep a secret. He made the dinner reservations, but made them for 4 so his sister, Cassie, and brother in law, Kyle, who were in disguise filming everything could celebrate with us. It was perfect, and was my absolute favorite day, which is hard to do when we've had a decade of favorite days.
