Elle and I matched on Bumble the first day of August 2020. I had moved down to Athens earlier that summer and was gearing up to start Law School at UGA. The line in Elle's bio that really stuck out to me was "Aspiring Jeopardy Champion." In high school, my family would regularly sit down to dinner right as the Jeopardy theme music was ending and try to eat, blurt out answers (questions?), and hold a conversation simultaneously. "Aspiring Jeopardy Champion" evoked the exact brainy energy I was looking for. We hit it off quickly and I found out that she was a student at UGA working on her Ph.D. in Communication. A week later we had our first date. The evening was as warm and humid as you might expect for the late summer in Georgia. We went to Creature Comforts brewery (pictured behind us at the top of the page). I rounded the corner and saw her waiting near the entrance. I couldn't have been any more nervous and she stood with an aura of affected nonchalance that made me suspect she might feel the same way. No two people have ever needed a beer more. Luckily we were at a brewery. We sat outdoors underneath a pavilion and a server let us know they'd be back to take our orders. Then, as if a switch flipped, the weather turned from muggy summer to Category 5 Hurricane. The wind whipped the rain in from the open sides of what now seemed to be our meager shelter. Thunder boomed overhead like cannonfire. All the while Elle and I made polite first date small talk, as if unaware of the raging tempest around us, except to slide our table away from the storm. The server came back with a makeshift menu umbrella just to tell us we couldn't be served until the weather subsided. For 40 minutes, we chatted while getting to know each other before the switch flipped again and the rain stopped. By that time, we didn't need the drinks but appreciated them all the same. Then, for the first time, we took a walk around campus where we'd spend the next few years in neighboring buildings. That storm wasn't our last but, like on our first date, we've weathered those storms together. We look forward to seeing y'all this summer, rain or shine! (But hopefully shine.)
