Things To Do

Amsterdam obviously has a ton to do, both touristy and non-touristy. In general as a tourist you can fill a good 4-5 days at a comfortable pace with the standard solid tourist activities, and then much longer if you start looking beyond Amsterdam. Since it’ll be July, we recommend booking everything in advance, especially if you want to go to the Anne Frank House or the Van Gogh Museum. The Anne Frank House releases tickets on a rolling basis 6 weeks in advance on Tuesdays.

Food and Drink

Enjoy our (very long) list of our favourite restaurants, bars, wine shops, cafes, etc. in Amsterdam.

Assorted Things To Do

We’ve compiled a small set of views, landmarks, and little fun facts into this Google list.

Boat Tour

It’s pretty touristy but you do really have to see Amsterdam from the water. Generally on these tours they also tell you a lot of fun facts. There are multiple companies in the city where you can book one.

Rijksmuseum

This museum is massive and it’s a must-visit. You should book at least a few days in advance.

Stedelijk Museum

This it the city’s big modern art museum. It’s also quite large, looks amusingly like a bathtub, and it’s our favorite museum in the city.

The Jordaan Neighborhood

This is the most classic Amsterdam neighbourhood. It's got very small streets, some beautiful canals, and countless coffee spots, pubs, and restaurants. Walk around here and take your time!

Westerpark

We love this park, and we don’t just say this because we live next to it! It’s got lots of nooks and crannies, some quasi-wild nature, bars, clubs, and restaurants.

Vondelpark

This one is more of a looker. Vondelpark is a very beautiful and well-manicured park, and it’s probably the most popular one in the city.

Albert Cuypmarkt

This is one of the largest street markets in Europe! Try classic Dutch food like fresh stroopwafels and poffertjes. Our first apartment in Amsterdam was just around the corner.

Outside Amsterdam

Zaanse Schans - This is the main sight people see outside of Amsterdam. It’s easily accessible with public transit and you can even bike there if you’re up for it. Utrecht - This is a beautiful city ~25 minutes by train from Amsterdam. The medieval centre has beautiful canals and you can climb the Dom Tower to get a great view. Den Haag - It's about an hour to get here by train. Come here to see The Girl With The Pearl Earring in the Mauritshuis Museum, which is next to the parliament building. Giethoorn - The Venice of the North! This is a beautiful tiny village well outside of Amsterdam, with only canals and no roads. It takes awhile to get here, and transit options are limited, so either get a seat on a tour bus or rent a car. Volendam - This is a very cute touristy fishing-and-cheese village, 20-30 min by bus from Amsterdam.
