South Bend has its own airport — South Bend International Airport (SBN) — which can be a convenient option! It’s located just a 15-minute drive from the University of Notre Dame campus. However, please note that airlines and destinations are limited, so you’ll most likely need to book a connecting flight.
Flight
Chicago has two major airports: O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Midway International Airport (MDW). Both are approximately a 2-hour drive from South Bend, depending on traffic. If you'd rather not rent a car, there are public transportation options available. You can take a train or bus from downtown Chicago. To get to South Bend by train or bus, you’ll first need to travel from the airport to downtown Chicago. From O’Hare, you can take the Blue Line CTA train directly into downtown. The trip takes about 45–60 minutes. From Midway, the Orange Line CTA train will take you downtown in about 30–45 minutes. You can also Uber or Lyft from either airport.
Train
Samantha knows this route well from her time living in Chicago! The South Shore Line is a train that runs between Millennium Station in downtown Chicago and South Bend International Airport. The full trip takes a little over 2 hours. If you're traveling from Chicago, South Bend International Airport is the final stop on the line — making it easy to know when to get off. If you're heading back to Chicago, Millennium Station will be the final stop in that direction. This is a budget-friendly and reliable option if you’re not renting a car — just be sure to check the schedule in advance, especially on weekends.
Travel Note
Parking is available for the ceremony and reception on Notre Dame's campus at the Morris Inn Lot, the Bookstore West Lot, and the Grotto Lot. The Morris Inn lot is closer to the wedding and reception venues but costs $18 per night or for the event. The Bookstore West Lot is around a quarter mile further away from the venues, but parking is free. Please pull up to the front drive of the Morris Inn and request a Bookstore West access code, then hang the parking tag above your dashboard. The closest parking lot to the Basilica is the Grotto Lot. Guests must enter through the East Gate on campus to access this lot (search “Notre Dame East Gatehouse” in Google Maps). If you choose to park here for the ceremony, you must re-park at the Morris Inn or Bookstore West lot for the reception.
