We met in high school, my freshman year and Jon’s sophomore year. It all began in Mrs. Brown’s 5th period keyboarding class. The seating chart had us sitting next to each other. Jon had shoulder length hair that covered one eye, and he swears up and down when I walked in the classroom everything was in slow motion, like a Nicolas Sparks movie. His jokes about my slow typing eventually sparked a friendship and he would walk me to my 6th period everyday. We grew apart when Jon went to basic training as he would only get his phone on Wednesdays. He always made sure to message me and I may or may not have returned the favor. I kept him guessing. When he got back, he asked me on a date to Starbucks in which I replied “I don’t like coffee” and I kindly turned him down… poor guy. On June 10th 2015, my car broke down on an exit coming home from Springfield, and what would you know, Jon welton from keyboarding class on his way home from drill came to save the day and helped me on the side of the road. He didn’t even know it was me, he was just trying to help someone stranded on the side of the road♥️ this incident sparked the friendship back up. I convinced him to go to the same college with me and do a volunteer program just so I would know someone. At UIS freshman year, we both found someone that we dated most the year, and we didn’t talk much as our personal lives became busy. By the end of freshman year we were both single. I had a family emergency one night and needed someone to take me to the hospital, and none other than Jon from keyboarding class came and picked me up, took me to the hospital to be with my loved one, and he stayed at bedside with me so I wouldn’t be alone and we just talked for hours, until my family member woke up. This really made me realize just how much this man cares and puts others first. Then the next day he asked me what was one thing on my bucket list I always wanted to do and had never done. And I said stargazing. This man took me to the country and went stargazing with me in the back of his Chevy suburban and played guitar for me. I had never felt so special. Everything was so innocent, no pressure just enjoying each others company. This is the moment I knew I could never let him go. He went from “Jon from keyboarding class” to “Jon my crush”. That same summer Jon introduced me to metal music and converted me to a metal head. That was just the beginning. It took so long for our stars to align (4 years to be exact). This man chased me for 4 years and I finally gave him the light of day and have never looked back. Sophomore year August 28th, 2017 he asked me to be his girlfriend. I loved doing college life with my best friend by my side. Fast forward to senior year, the hardest year yet. Jon got deployed and was able to finish his criminal justice degree online and overseas. I finished my nursing degree with tremendous support from friends and family. It was so hard spending over a year away from each other. We missed anniversaries, holidays, graduations. We endured a freaking pandemic which pushed his homecoming date further back. I graduated nursing school online in the pleasure of my grandparents basement as the school shut down, clinicals were cancelled and we were forced to evacuate campus. This was so hard as I felt like it was constantly flooding bad news and I was just trying to stay afloat. Jon surprised me one day and kept his homecoming a secret. It was so great to finally have him home safe. August 28th, 2021 Jon proposed to me at none other than the “Devils backbone”. Honestly the rest is history. Now for wedding planning💍
