Question

What’s the weather like?

Answer

The average temperature during the month of March is 85°F and is quite humid. The average low and high temperatures ranges from 77*F to 87*F. It'll be warm so wear loose clothes. Don't forget to bring beach wear (sandals, flip flops, swimsuits, sunglasses, sunscreen).

Question

Are U.S dollars accepted?

Answer

No, but there are plenty of ATMs in Cartagena. We recommend only exchanging enougth cash for a taxi at the airport as they typically do not have the best rates. You will be able to find ATMs located in the back corner of departures section. There are also kiosks to exchange money, as well. Credit cards are great for any larger purchases. Pesos will be needed when bartering with the locals. Once you get to your hotel, they will be able to recommend the best places to exchange money.

Question

What is Colombia Currency?

Answer

The Colombian Peso is the official currency of Colombia. The abbreviation is COP when researching exchange rates. The COP has been appreciating greatly over the last decade as the increased security situation has attracted billions in foreign investment capital. The denominations for the bills starting from greatest to least are 50,000 COP (Approx. $17 USD), 20,000 COP (Approx. $7 USD), 10,000 COP (Approx. $3.5 USD), 5,000 COP (Approx. $1.70 USD), 2,000 COP (Approx. 70 cents) and 1,000 COP (Approx. 30 cents). As you know, exchange rates vary every day so before making any transaction please double check the rates.

Question

Is tipping customary in Colombia?

Answer

There is typically a 10% tip (service) added to your bill. If service was extraordinary, feel free to add some extra pesos. If not, you will not be offending anyone. Please tip any tour guides you may use.

Question

What's the easiest way to get around?

Answer

We're a big fan of UBER for several reasons. UBER is everywhere, safe, and trackable. For the most part, you can use it even if you don't speak Spanish. You don't have to worry about currency conversions or carrying around Colombian Pesos. We highly recommend downloading the UBER app and linking it to a credit card with no foreign transaction fee prior to travel. Once your are in the Old City, almost everything you want to do is either walking distance or just a carriage ride away but again, UBER is available as well! If you're staying at a hotel and don't use UBER, your hotel will be able to arrange transportation for you to and from a destination.

Question

Is there crime?

Answer

it's completely safe. The city has a very prominent police presence and we have never felt unsafe. As in any major city, exercise common sense.

Question

Do I need Visa?

Answer

U.S. Citizens just need a passport to travel to Colombia. Be sure to check the expiration date! It should be at least 3 months after the date of travel to ensure seamless entry back to the US. No visa is necessary.
