Becoming Avery-DayeBecoming Avery-Daye

"This is why I love you."

A Story of Faith, Friendship, and Forever Before the vows, the décor, or the music, there was us. Two souls who found each other in the quiet hours of the night and never stopped choosing each other since. What began as laughter and late-night FaceTime calls became a decade of love built on faith, friendship, and fierce commitment. Through every season, we’ve grown, forgiven, and learned that real love doesn’t just happen, it’s built, brick by brick, heart to heart. This is our story, a love that refuses to quit.

Chapter One: Where It All BeganChapter One: Where It All Began

It started in the quiet of the night, where laughter met destiny.

They met online, two lives that should’ve never crossed paths but somehow did. A few messages turned into hours of conversation, and somewhere between midnight and morning, laughter started to feel like fate. Dominique hit FaceTime at 2 a.m. without hesitation. “We were both in bed,” he remembers with a grin. “And yes, I had my bonnet on. I wasn’t about to dry out my hair for this guy.” Jonathan, who hates FaceTime, laughs at the memory. “We talked for hours. I remember thinking, He’s a model. Very nice.” By the next day, they met for dinner after church. When Dominique slid into Jonathan’s “little dirty Hyundai Santa Fe,” his heart caught him off guard. “That’s when I knew,” he says. “This was my person. I argued with myself the whole ride, but deep down, I already knew.” A decade later, that moment still feels sacred, a reminder that love sometimes shows up quietly, bonnet and all.

Chapter Two: The Ride and the RealizationChapter Two: The Ride and the Realization

One car ride, one glance, and the realization that forever had already begun.

The drive to dinner was filled with nervous laughter, quick glances, and the kind of energy that only happens once. Dominique tried to act casual, but his thoughts were racing. He couldn’t believe how natural it all felt. That night marked the first of many small beginnings, simple, ordinary moments that became the foundation of something extraordinary. By dessert, what could have been a first date became the first day of the rest of their lives. They didn’t need fireworks or perfect words, they needed presence. And in that presence, they both found peace.

Chapter Three: A Love That Grew Up With UsChapter Three: A Love That Grew Up With Us

Infatuation became intention. Time made it real.

A decade later, their love feels different, stronger, wiser. “Love isn’t one dimensional,” Dominique says. “It evolves. What’s grown most is our capacity to love, and the intention behind it.” Jonathan leans in slightly, eyes soft. “Everyone starts with infatuation,” he says. “But now it’s solid. We’ve been through it, over it, under it, and around it, and we’re still here.” Dominique reaches for his hand as he smiles back. They’ve learned that love isn’t proven in the easy moments, it’s refined in the hard ones. Every trial left a mark, but it also left a reminder: we’re still standing.

Chapter Four: Representation and ResilienceChapter Four: Representation and Resilience

Their love became more than theirs, it became an example of what’s possible.

For Dominique, their relationship represents stability. “When I tell people how long we’ve been together, they’re floored,” he says. “You don’t see many couples, gay or straight, lasting like that. There’s this stigma that same sex couples move fast and end faster. We started fast, but we tucked in and stood the test of time.” He laughs softly, remembering. “Our nephew always says, ‘Uncle Dom, you and Uncle Jon are goals!’ He doesn’t know it, but that means the world to me.” Jonathan’s voice is thoughtful. “It’s the life I never thought I’d have,” he says. “To those watching, especially young gay couples, it shows what’s possible when you’re committed.” Their story is proof that love doesn’t need permission, it just needs two people who refuse to give up.

Chapter Five: The Work Behind ForeverChapter Five: The Work Behind Forever

Love isn’t effortless. It’s sacred work, patient, personal, and worth it.

“When we met, I was newly out, by force, not by choice,” Dominique says. “Jonathan wasn’t out yet, and it took patience and grace to understand each other’s journeys.” Jonathan exhales slowly. “I had to unlearn what I thought my life was supposed to look like, the boxes people built for me,” he says quietly. “Together, we had to tear down walls and remind each other that leaving wasn’t an option.” They didn’t fall into love, they chose it, over and over again. “I’m extremely proud of Jonathan,” Dominique says, smiling. “He’s always visible, just not loud. My grandmother once told me, ‘This is your life and your business. You don’t have to make a Facebook status about it. Just live.’” Jonathan’s lips curve into a knowing smile. “I’ve never needed the world’s validation,” he says. “As long as the people who matter know and support us, that’s enough.” Their love doesn’t need an audience, it radiates quietly, steady and sure.

Chapter Six: The Night That Changed EverythingChapter Six: The Night That Changed Everything

No grand gesture. Just two hearts deciding on forever in the soft light of a TV screen.

It happened the way most beautiful things do, quietly. One night in January 2025, they were watching TV when someone proposed on screen. “I looked over and said, ‘We should get married,’” Dominique recalls. “He said, ‘Okay.’ I said, ‘For real?’ He said, ‘Yeah.’ I just stared at him for a second, waiting for him to laugh, but he didn’t. I was stunned.” Jonathan smiles. “He’d mentioned marriage a couple of times before, but that night felt different. I realized none of the reasons I’d hesitated really mattered. I loved him. He loved me. So why wait?” The next morning, a text from Dominique sealed it: ‘So we’re engaged?’ Jonathan replied, ‘Yep.’ And just like that, forever had a start date.

Chapter Seven: Family, Joy, and The SloverChapter Seven: Family, Joy, and The Slover

Their love multiplied, celebrated by those who’d prayed, hoped, and waited for this moment.

“His sister Alyssa screamed,” Dominique laughs. “I think she cried a little. His dad? He’s planning to outdress us.” Jonathan shakes his head, smiling. “Everyone was excited. Most said, ‘About time.’ My mom actually thought we were already married.” Choosing The Slover Library was effortless. “Once Jonathan saw it, he wasn’t budging,” Dominique says. “It ties into our story, he was an English teacher when we met, and it’s a library. It symbolizes our academic journey. Regal is just us.” Jonathan brushes his hand along Dominique’s shoulder. “The Slover is beautiful, local, and embodies that regal simplicity that represents us. I suggested the ‘Regal Editorial’ theme because he’s my model, and it felt like the perfect nod to how we began.”

Chapter Eight: Love in the EverydayChapter Eight: Love in the Everyday

Grand gestures fade. What lasts are the quiet rhythms of care and consistency.

Everything about their life together holds meaning. “Every night I make his iced coffee for the next morning,” Dominique says. “He picks my outfit and irons it so I don’t stress in the morning. Everyday love is lightening the load, making life softer for each other.” Jonathan smiles. “It’s consistency, transparency, trust, and teamwork,” he says. “Life is a highway, and we’re still riding together.” Their home is more than walls, it’s a sanctuary where laughter heals and peace is sacred.

Chapter Nine: Faith, Forgiveness, and FriendshipChapter Nine: Faith, Forgiveness, and Friendship

Through every storm, faith has been their anchor and forgiveness their shelter.

Both raised in church, their shared faith remains an anchor. They go to different churches now, and that’s okay, both love where they are. Their spiritual foundation continues to center their relationship, grounding their love through every storm. “Love takes a lot of forgiving and unlearning,” Dominique admits, fingers brushing Jonathan’s. “It’s not for the faint of heart.” Jonathan looks over, voice low. “Without God,” he says, “we’re nothing. Individually or together.”

Chapter Ten: Legacy and ForeverChapter Ten: Legacy and Forever

Ten years, ten chapters, one unshakable love.

“He’s taught me to be softer,” Jonathan says, glancing at Dominique with a half-smile. “He’s the most caring person I know.” “He’s taught me that words have meaning,” Dominique adds gently. They’ve lifted each other higher, academically, emotionally, spiritually. Jonathan once joked, “Every damn thing in this house is going to be educated to the highest degree.” Now, it’s their truth. Both hold doctorates, but the real achievement is the life they’ve built together, intentional, individual, unshakable. “We show up,” Dominique says. “That’s how we celebrate each other’s wins.” Jonathan chuckles. “And we jump on hotel beds before checkout,” he adds. “It’s childish, but it’s ours.” Dominique rests a hand on Jonathan’s knee. “Through it all,” he says, “we’ve always chosen each other.” Jonathan meets his eyes. “Every single time.” Dominique: “He’s my calm, my peace, and my proof that God listens.” Jonathan: “He’s my home. My forever.”
