The cliche “It started with a swipe” applies in this story. However, it was not the typical start to a relationship. They started to talk online and noticed they had a lot of things in common but the timing for Emily was not ideal as she had just started talking to someone else. She was upfront and told Spencer about this situation and said that she wanted to remain friends because she really enjoyed talking to him. Spencer thanked her for being honest about the situation but he was not interested in being just friends with Emily, he even told his best friend Derek that Emily was his “future wife”. A few days of not talking to each other went by but Emily could not continue on without talking to Spencer, she realized he was the guy she wanted to get to know. Lucky for her, Spencer did not take much convincing to come to Iowa City to meet Emily and her friends. They hit it off and the rest is history.
Emily had been wishing for a proposal for awhile before it happened but Spencer wanted to make sure everything was perfect and a surprise. He had planned to take her to Alaska, a place they always talked about traveling to together. They planned an Alaskan cruise with their friends Derek and Sydney for June, 2024. He planned to do it on formal night so that they were dressed up and looking fancy. They went out on the deck of the ship after dinner to take pictures and Spencer requested that they take solo pictures of Emily looking out at the ocean. While she was looking out, Spencer got down on one knee behind her. When she was done taking the photos, Emily turned around to see Spencer on one knee and holding out a ring. He said that he wanted to propose for a long time and then proceeded to ask Emily to marry him and she said YES!
