Mackenzie was transferring colleges to West Virginia University where her sister Kylee already attended. John was in Kylee's friend group. They met when Mackenzie had come to visit Kylee, after meeting he said "thats my future wife". After months of being friends who flirted, they began dating in June of 2019.
