John swears by their margaritas, claiming they are the best in San Diego—perfectly crafted with fresh ingredients and just the right kick. Meanwhile, Gabby can’t get enough of their mouthwatering enchiladas, comforting tortilla soup, and warm, handmade tortillas that melt in your mouth.
Baja Betty's
Welcome to Baja Betty's, Gabby’s favorite spot in the heart of Hillcrest, San Diego! With its LGBTQ-friendly atmosphere, this vibrant restaurant has been a beloved staple for nearly 20 years, known for its infectious energy and welcoming vibe. Enjoy the lively music and the warm hospitality of the friendly hosts, especially our favorite, Jacob—make sure to ask for him and tell him John and Gabby sent you!
insideOUT
Just wanted to share a little gem with you—InsideOUT is one of our all-time favorite spots, especially during their happy hour (Monday through Thursday, 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM)! It’s the perfect place to kick back and enjoy some delicious bites and drinks. Gabby’s go-to is the Freaky Tiki cocktail—super refreshing and fun! John, on the other hand, can’t resist their sweet potato fries, the CHIPS & DIP, and the mouthwatering Australian Hot Stone Filet Mignon. Trust us, those are a must-try!
Great Maple - Hillcrest
If you’re heading to Great Maple, you’re in for a treat! Gabby’s all about the Chilaquiles, Smoked Beef Brisket Hash, and the Made-to-Order Bacon Maple Donuts (they’re seriously next level!). John, on the other hand, sticks to the classics with Pigs in a Blanket and an Old Fashioned—you can’t go wrong with that combo.
Azucar
When we go to Azucar, there are a few things we always order! We start with a Cafe con Leche to share, then dive into their delicious Meat Pies, the Blueberry Scone, and the Passion Fruit Scone—all so fresh and flavorful. We also love the España Sandwich and the Guava & Cheese Strudels and/or Quiches
Liberty Public Market
Liberty Public Market is such a fun place to explore! It’s one of our favorite food halls, and there’s so much variety. Here are some spots we always stop by: Chris’ Ono Grinds for some amazing Hawaiian flavors Cane Patch Kitchen for a delicious taste of the islands Mama Made Thai if you’re craving some authentic Thai dishes Parana Empanadas for the most flavorful Argentine empanadas Latin Chef for some fantastic Latin-inspired dishes If you're up for some adventures outside the market, John recommends The Lot or Stone Brewery—great vibes and craft brews. And if you're looking for something a little more active, Gabby suggests taking your furry friend paddle boarding with West Coast Paddle Board Rentals on the waterfront at the Courtyard Marriott Liberty Station—it’s such a fun way to enjoy the water! Cocina 35 Brunch
At Cocina 35, the Chilaquiles are a must-try, and John’s favorite is the Los Rancheros—the best seller! It’s made with rich ranchero salsa, topped with savory beef chorizo and sunny-side-up eggs. Gabby, on the other hand, loves the Al Pastor version, featuring a creamy secret salsa, crispy al pastor meat, and a sweet touch of grilled pineapple. Both options are packed with flavor and a true taste of Cocina 35!
Dirty Birds Liberty Station
At Dirty Birds, Gabby always goes for the Lemon Pepper and Buffalo Wings—the perfect balance of tangy and spicy. John, on the other hand, swears by the rich, savory flavor of the Garlic Parmesan Wings with a side of onion rings.
The Fire Spot
If you’re in the mood for some delicious Korean BBQ, The Fire Spot is John’s absolute favorite! It’s a top spot for charcoal grilling in the heart of Convoy, which is a vibrant, Asian-affluent neighborhood with tons of amazing food options. The BBQ experience here is always a hit—great flavors, great atmosphere, and of course, the charcoal makes all the difference.
Clem’s Station
If you’re ever craving some laid-back vibes and good eats, Clem's Station is a classic go-to! They’ve got amazing BBQ Chicken Pizza and the Talmadge Pie (aka meat lover's pizza) that are always a hit. Plus, if you're in the mood for some drinks, they’ve got a great selection of draft beers. It’s also the perfect spot for catching sports on the TVs while enjoying some classic bar food like burgers, fries, and tater tots. And the best part? Seven Grand San Diego
If you're in the mood for a cozy, speakeasy-style vibe, Seven Grand is John’s absolute favorite whiskey bar. The atmosphere is amazing, with dim lighting and a cool, vintage feel. They also feature live jazz on certain nights, which really sets the mood for a great evening. If you're a whiskey fan (or even if you're not), their selection is top-notch, and the whole experience feels like something out of an old-school prohibition era.
Tribute Pizza
If you're a pizza lover, Tribute Pizza is a must-visit! John is a huge fan, and it’s honestly a pizza lover's dream. They’ve got every flavor you can imagine, and the wood-fired pizzas are always spot on. The place has a really bright, welcoming vibe with modern furnishings and an open kitchen, so you can watch the magic happen. Plus, they serve beer and wine, making it the perfect spot for a relaxed meal.
Hash House A Go Go
At Hash House A Go Go, John always opts for the Biscuits & Gravy—two fresh buttermilk biscuits topped with rich pork sausage gravy, two eggs, and a garnish of chopped bell pepper and onion. He adds a crispy chicken breast for an extra kick. Gabby, on the other hand, loves the Sage Fried Chicken & Eggs, featuring a perfectly fried chicken breast, two eggs any style, bacon, mashed potatoes, a fresh biscuit, and a side of fruit. Both dishes are hearty, flavorful, and sure to satisfy!
Din Tai Fung
Din Tai Fung is the place to be for some incredible dumplings and Asian comfort food! It’s famous for its mouthwatering Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings), and the Cucumber Salad is a refreshing must-try. We love how their family-style dining lets everyone sample a little bit of everything—perfect for sharing! Gabby’s go-to drink is their Lychee Martini, and John can’t resist their Hot and Sour Soup (pork). You really can’t go wrong with their dumplings, Wontons, or the Garlic Green Beans—all are absolutely delicious!
Salt & Straw
Salt & Straw in the heart of Little Italy is a must-visit! Gabby loves sampling all their seasonal flavors—there’s always something new and exciting to try. She typically goes for the Chocolate Gooey Brownie, which is a total treat. John, on the other hand, loves to order whatever's featured on their seasonal menu—there’s always something unique and delicious to enjoy.
Queenstown Public House
Start off with some delicious lamb skewers at Queenstown. If you’re in the mood for a hearty meal, John raves about the fried chicken dinner, and Gabby swears by the Parlor Pot Pie (comfort food at its best!). If you still have room, don’t miss the crispy sweet potato fries, and make sure to try one of their signature cocktails while you're there.
The Crack Shack - Little Italy
The Crack Shack—trust us, you’ll want to check it out! Gabby’s go-to is the Señor Croque—a fried Jidori chicken breast topped with bacon, fried egg, cheddar, miso-maple butter, all sandwiched in a buttery brioche. It’s a game-changer! John swears by the Half Bird, their signature Jidori fried chicken, paired with your choice of dipping sauces. If you love fried chicken, this is the place to be.
Civico 1845
Civico 1845 is an authentic Italian restaurant that we think you’ll love! Gabby couldn’t get enough of the Pappardelle Brasato, a rich short rib pasta that’s simply delicious. John was equally impressed by the Scialatiella Civico—a seafood pasta dish that he had made just to his liking (no shrimp, but with plenty of clams and calamari).
Tacos El Gordo
At Tacos El Gordo, there’s a taco for every taste! If you’re Team Gabby, you’ll want to try the Tacos de Adobada—marinated pork with a perfect balance of smoky and spicy flavors. For Team John, the Tacos de Lengua (beef tongue) are a must, offering a tender and savory bite that’s a true delicacy. Either way, you’re in for an unforgettable taco experience!
Altitude Sky Lounge
Kick off your night at Altitude Sky Lounge, a stunning rooftop bar where you can sip on creative cocktails while cozying up by a bonfire pit. With panoramic views of the San Diego skyline and Petco Park, it’s the perfect spot to pre-game and soak in the atmosphere before the game or your next adventure!
Las Hadas Bar and Grill
After pre-gaming at Altitude Sky Lounge, head over to Las Hadas Bar and Grill for a delicious meal with a laid-back vibe. Start with chicken wings as an appetizer, then dive into main entrees like Carne Asada Fries or Fish Tacos. For a fun twist, order their signature Orange Poppers to get the buzz going, or enjoy other refreshing cocktails to keep the night lively!
Karina's Cantina Gaslamp
At Karina's Cantina, John kicks things off with the Pulpo a Las Brasas, which he swears is the best grilled octopus around. Gabby, on the other hand, enjoys the fresh and zesty Ceviche or the classic comfort of their flavorful Enchiladas. Whatever you choose, you’re in for a treat!
Cocina De Barrio - Point Loma
At Cocina de Barrio, John kicks off with their bottomless mimosas, the perfect way to start any brunch. Gabby goes for the delicious Chilaquiles Verdes, featuring crisp corn tortilla strips, refried beans, salsa verde, ten-hour braised Birria beef, queso fresco, pickled red onions, and sour cream.
