We met in the 9th grade, but we don't remember much aside from playing tennis together with friends after finishing the mile run. Even though we went to the same high school and considering where we are now, we actually disliked the other then and hung out in different circles! Fast forward 7 years to our junior year at UC San Diego where we reconnected thanks to a mutual friend. We started hanging out as friends and decided to become housemates alongside two others for our senior year. One thing led to another and in the last quarter of our senior year, we started dating. Since we had several mutual friends, we tried hiding it at first. We failed terribly and quickly. Ask our Best Man and Maid of Honor! By the time we started dating, Johanna had already accepted a job offer in New York City and was planning to move across the country in 6 months. We decided we were going to make it work. For 15 months, we'd take turns travelling to one another in San Diego and New York City. Due to the time difference, Johanna would wake up to "good night" texts, and Scott would wake up to "good morning" texts. It didn't take us long to realize this was something that we wanted to make work no matter how hard it got from the big trips to the little things every day. Then in Dec 2016, our careers took us back to the San Francisco Bay Area at the same time where we decided to move in together. As we like to say, all we've ever known is a few inches or 2700+ miles :)
One night, Scott took Johanna out on a date. Those of you who know us well know that Johanna typically plans all of our dates. To throw her off the scent, Scott told Johanna that he got the ideas from a coworker who took his wife out on the same date that we were going on. There were two stops for "sightseeing." Since the county just ordered another lockdown earlier that week, our options were limited for a sit-down dinner and drinks. Our first stop was the Marin Headlands. We ordered empanadas to go for dinner and brought beer & whiteclaw with us for the road. It was dark and sprinkling, but we enjoyed each other's company while sitting in the car in full view of the Golden Gate Bridge. The second stop was a hotel where we had a "reservation for their skydeck" to view the city skyline. We waited in the lobby until our "reservation time" came. Up the elevators we go and when Johanna started to round the corner, that's when she saw the photographer. In the event space was a beautiful arrangement of roses and candles. There were signs that spoke to our chapter with long distance. Johanna immediately started crying when she realized what was about to happen. Scott took her hand, gave the speech he was practicing in the middle of the night without her knowledge, got down on one knee, and popped the question! She said yes, they popped bubbly and the rest is history :)
