Question

Visa

Answer

-Mexicanos no necesitan Visa -U.S. citizens do not need a Colombian visa for a tourist or business stay of 90 days or less https://www-migracioncolombia-gov-co.translate.goog/subdireccion-de-control-migratorio/requisitos-de-viaje?_x_tr_sl=es&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=es&_x_tr_pto=wapp

Question

Colombian Peso

Answer

The official currency of Cartagena is the Colombian peso, which may be designated as “$”, “COP” or “COL$”. The meaning of semicolons when it comes to currency is the opposite of the US. For example, $20,000 = twenty thousand Colombian pesos (approximately $5.00 USD). USD and other foreign currencies will not be accepted. We recommend using the currency exchange counters before leaving the Cartagena airport to get the best rates. If you forget, you can find a handful of ATMs in the city.

Question

Credit Cards

Answer

Credit cards are accepted in the main stores, hotels and restaurants in Cartagena. As in many South American countries, Visa, MasterCard and American Express are the most widely accepted credit cards in Colombia. If you use your card at a restaurant, you may be asked if it is credit (credit) or debit (debit). If you are using a credit card (credit card), you may be asked how many installments you want to pay. Be sure to select ‘ una, por favor ‘ (one please), though you can even reportedly pay the dinner bill in up to 24 installments. If you use a debit card (debit card), you will be asked if it is a checking or savings account. To minimize inconvenience, please inform your bank or card issuer that you will be traveling abroad to Colombia and the dates you will be traveling. This will prevent your card from being frozen for possible fraud when you are using it in Colombia. Many credit cards do not offer foreign transaction fees, but we recommend checking with your bank.

Question

Gratuity Tips

Answer

A 10% gratuity (service) is usually added to your bill. If the service was extraordinary, feel free to add a few extra pesos. If not, you won’t offend anyone. If you sign up for any excursions or tours, we recommend that you tip your guides.

Question

Internet & Phone

Answer

We recommend that you check with your cell phone provider regarding international data plans and roaming charges. If an international plan isn’t an option, you should turn off “mobile data” once you land to avoid surprise charges for international roaming, texting, or data usage. We recommend purchasing a local SIM card for minutes and data, and these can be purchased at the airport or convenience stores in Cartagena. Wifi Hotels will offer complementary WiFi. For Apple users, you can use iMessage and FaceTime while connected to a WiFi network free of charge. We highly recommend using the WhatsApp app for international texting. This is also the best way to reach the bride and groom during the wedding festivities.
