Spencer and Jess met and fell in love unexpectedly in late November 2016. Jess had just returned from a solo trip around Thailand, jet lagged and hosting a friend at her home before he set off on a backpacking trip. This friend asked if his backpacking buddy could also crash on Jess' couch, and she obliged. Meanwhile, Spencer was preparing for this very backpacking trip and showed up at Jess' house thinking it was the home of some random dude his friend knew. When he saw Jess approaching the door, he had only seconds to compose himself before she greeted him with a warm smile and glass of red wine. Jess was prepared to return to work the very day Spencer was to set off for the Lost Coast of California. She had toyed with joining on the backpacking trip, but insisted she had to return to the office after two weeks away in Thailand. Then, Spencer hit her with a line tailor-made for 24-year-old Jess: "What will you remember 10 years from now? Sitting at your desk, or backpacking the Lost Coast with friends?" She was sold. They spent nearly 30 miles together walking the rugged California coastline, getting to know each other and mostly laughing at each others' similarly dorky sense of humor. After the trip, Spencer returned to Jess' home in Berkeley and, as they say, the rest is history.
