Like all good millennials looking for love, we met on Tinder. Who wouldn't swipe right on a guy posing with a giraffe and a Mean Girls reference? Our first date was at a local bar in DC, Lost & Found, followed by our first of many dinners at Beau Thai. Unsurprisingly, our second date was a restaurant on 14th Street with live jazz Kiran knew about despite it only opening the week before. He brought Jess a moose souvenir from his recent trip to Toronto and the rest is history. Three months later Kiran asked Jess on a scale of 1 to 10 how interested she would be in a road trip that fall to Asheville (she gave it a 9) and running a half marathon there (she generously gave it a 4). On the drive down, Jess insisted on stopping for snow cones and lemurs. After Kiran ran a speedy 13.1 miles, we got to know Asheville and fell in love with the blue ridge mountains, the people, local breweries & dogs, and eventually each other. Though we didn’t know it at the time, that was just the beginning!
Because exploring new places and spending time with loved ones has always been a joy for us, it was fitting for the proposal to happen during a trip to San Francisco to visit friends. Neither of us had spent much time in the area, so Jess reached out to local friends Colin and Sam for suggestions on what to do. Unbeknownst to Jess, the hike on Mt Tam Colin suggested was something Kiran and Colin came up with together. The day of the hike could not have gone better. It started with oysters on Stinson Beach. The skies were clear with a cool breeze during our assent. We paused at a lonely vista to admire the view of the bay, and that is where Kiran got on a knee and proposed to Jess, while Colin photographed it all. The rest of the weekend was full of our favorite things, including fresh flowers, dumplings, museums, and friends.
