This is one of the best places in the entire world. Fluffy alpacas abound. You can feed them apples. There are also very soft rabbits and barn cats. Just go. Buck Brook Alpacas has offered a discount for anyone who books activities with them! Use the code: KOHN-LARKINS.
The Catskills are full of all season trails of every difficulty; if you like to hike, there's something for you here. We have spent many happy hours discovering trails in the region - during the COVID lockdown it was a blessing to find spaces to stay active while keeping a safe distance away from other people. Three great options are: 1) Fallsburg Rails to Trails (Easy): a flat trail converted from train tracks that stays close to civilization and features landmarks of local history along the way. 2) Neversink Gorge Trails (Medium - and our favorite hiking spot!): While there are a number of trails you can take here, we recommend committing to one that will take you to magical waterfalls deep in the woods. 3) Gertrude's Nose (Hard): set in Minnewaska State Park, this trail will take several hours to complete, but will reward you with unparalleled views of gorges and the Hudson Valley.
Stock up on local produce, dairy and eggs at our favorite local farmstand! If you are lucky, you will see the animal friends Hannah is obsessed with here, including tiny goats, a stoic burro, and Barley the dog. Barley will appreciate belly rubs.
Livingston Manor is an adorable little town near Callicoon Center. We recommend walking along the high street, popping into Claudia Kohn's favorite thrift store (Life Repurposed), and taking a short (but steep!) hike on the Round Top trail (Jeremy is pictured above at one of the scenic points on the trail). If you like beer, the Kaatskeller Brewery is a local favorite here.
We love this distillery in Roscoe, a fun town near Callicoon Center. In fact, we will have booze from this very spot at our wedding! It is definitely worth going in for a free tasting. While you are there, explore the town of Roscoe: students driving to and from universities often stop here, and the Roscoe Diner is full of flags from schools across the country. The Trout Town Brewery is beloved by beer drinkers. There are also hikes and other outdoor activities nearby.
This new independent bookstore in Roscoe has a great selection of new and used books and, most importantly, an adorable dog that the bookstore is named for! It is right across the road from "Do Good Spirits," so we recommend doing a tasting at the distillery and then wandering over to browse!
We love tandem kayaking down the Delaware River, particularly in the summer when it feels so good to run your hands through the cool water. Landers River Trips will set you up with kayaks, drive you to a starting point, and you can make your way back to where they are based.
A highlight for us every summer is taking a dip in one of the ponds near Callicoon Center! Two amazing options are Crystal Lake and Big Pond.
