The historic centre of Coruña. Our favourite spots in the Old Town are: -Adega Os Arcos: a lovely restaurant for a glass of wine, traditional Galician cheeses and cured meats. We recommend the Cecina & Jamón Ibérico (Italian Proscuitto's rival). -Jamonería La Leonesa: A traditional jamonería, a true taste of authentic Spain. Christian has been coming here since he was a child. -Plaza de Azcárraga: Jenn's favourite place in the city and where we got engaged! -Jardin de san Carlos: a beautiful garden overlooking the port and the burial place of Sir John Moore. -A Boca do Lobo: a great spot for lunch. A menú del día (3 course meal with wine) is approx €13.
The town square. A great place to sit back with a glass of wine and a tapa!
The world's oldest functioning Roman lighthouse. Put your walking shoes on and go for a walk to the Torre, it's a must see! You can walk along the Paseo Marítimo, a beautiful promenade that goes all around the city.
Octopus (Pulpo) is one of the main delicacies in Galicia and this is the best place for it in Coruña. Pulpo a Feira con Cachelos (boiled potatoes) with Godello wine is an absolute must try!
Calle Galera is one of the main tapas streets, together with Calle Barrera & Calle Estrella. They all intertwine and are excellent for traditional tapas. Most restaurants on these streets are great but try to avoid any that display Octopus or seafood in the windows as they tend to be tourist traps! A few of our favourite spots are Mesón El Serrano, Casa da Vella, La Bombilla (super cheap) & Charlatán. Don't be afraid to explore!
On the far end of Orzán beach, this is our favourite place in the city to sunbathe and swim! The neighbouring beaches of Orzán & Riazor are also lovely but we find the undertow and waves more rough. Matadero's position allows for much calmer waters and shelter from the wind. Always look for the flags at the beach, if they are red do not swim.
A trendy surfers bar, one of our favourite spots for an evening drink. It's anything but fancy and usually you will find large crowds gathered outside. A few meters away is La Urbana with an outside terrace, it's always full of life in the evenings!
Ladies (and men) if you're looking to shop this is one of the best places to do so. Zara was founded in A Coruña. The global flagship store is located here and it's gorgeous! Be sure to check out Massimo Duti and Bimba y Lola! The Plaza de Lugo Mercado (market) is worth a visit to check out the fresh seafood, produce and Galician delicacies.
If you are looking to get out of the city for the day there are several options within half an hour distance. There is a train and bus station in the city and renting a car from the train station is fairly easy. We recommend: -Castillo de Santa Cruz: a fortress built in the 1600's. -Mera: a lovely town on the outskirts of Coruña with two of the most beautiful beaches in the province; Mera & Espiñeiro. -Pontedeume: a historical town home to the national park Fragas do Eume. If you're up for a hike through a forested park alongside a river this is definitely for you! It takes about 3 hours (to go and come back) from the bottom entry point, where you will hike alongside the river Eume through the forest to an ancient monastery. There are several paths but the main road which cars can access is entirely paved so on this route the difficulty level is low.
