The Channel Islands National Park is just off the coast of Ventura / Santa Barbara and they are breathtaking. If you have the time we would highly recommend taking a trip out to see them. Island Packers (and other companies) offer island trips, whale watching, and kayaking trips around them. You're guaranteed to see dolphins, seals, and the summer season is known for Humpbacks (maybe they'll be breaching!), Fin, and Blue (largest animal to ever exist) whales. https://islandpackers.com/ You can also snorkel or SCUBA dive the islands. https://spectreboat.com/ Or go fishing. https://www.channelislandssportfishing.com/
The directions driving up from LA will probably take you via the inland route, but if you have some time the drive up the Pacific Coast Highway (route 1) through Malibu is very pretty and you can stop at Neptune's Net or Broad Street Oyster Company and get some good seafood.
