Nestled between the Painted Desert and ponderosa highlands of northern Arizona Wupatki seems like an unlikely landscape for a thriving community. In the early 1100s during a time period of cooler temperatures and wetter seasons the ancestors of contemporary Pueblo communities created a bustling center of trade and culture. For Hopi people these sites represent the footprints of their ancestors. Fun fact: Caleb and Jenny's home in Flagstaff was inspired by the Wukoki pueblo at Wupatki. It's multi-level, cubic structure with a south-facing terrace are all elements of their house their overlooks town near Lowell Observatory. Wupatki is very close to our wedding and camping site so don't pass this one up!
Lowell Observatory is an independent, non-profit research institution founded in 1894 by mathematician and astronomer Percival Lowell. Located just west of downtown Flagstaff, they have multiple telescopes to view the night sky, as well as late-night constellation tours. Check out their website and social media for current events.
Meteor Crater is a meteorite impact crater about 37 mi east of Flagstaff and 18 mi west of Winslow in the desert of northern Arizona, United States. It is the best preserved Meteor Crater impact site on Earth. The site had several earlier names, and fragments of the meteorite are officially called the Canyon Diablo Meteorite, after the adjacent Cañon Diablo
Come gaze across curved canyon walls. Among the remarkable geological formations of the canyon itself, the former homes of ancient inhabitants are easily evident. Along the trails you can imagine life within Walnut Canyon, while visiting actual pueblos and walking in the steps of those who came before. The one mile round-trip Island Trail provides access to 25 cliff dwellings.
Bearizona is approximately 160 acres. Visitors will drive through more than three miles of Ponderosa Pine Forest, viewing North American animals in natural habitats when they visit. More animals are exhibited in Fort Bearizona, a beautiful 20-acre walk-thru area, along winding paths which is more of a “zoo” typesetting.
The Museum was established as a repository for Indigenous material and natural history specimens from the Colorado Plateau.

The Arboretum at Flagstaff is a 200-acre arboretum that is home to 750 species of mostly drought-tolerant adapted and native plants representative of the high-desert Colorado Plateau, home to the Grand Canyon and Zion National Park.
The duplex-style Riordan Mansion remains one of the finest examples of American Arts and Crafts-style architecture open to the public today. Designed by the architect of the impressive El Tovar Hotel at the Grand Canyon, Charles Whittlesey, the homes were built in 1904 with indoor plumbing, hot and cold running water, central heat, and electric lights, reflecting the most modern technology and design of the time.
