The proposalThe proposal

Adirondacks style

Redli, tell us how you proposed?! It was great, really nice. I was a bit nervous but I think it went well. We went on a camping trip and I asked while we were out on a boat ride. I tried not to cry but have to admit there were a few tears. But we had a nice weekend. Jen, tell us how Redli proposed?! Well, we looked for an engagement ring together, so I knew it was on the horizon. We planned a special camping trip for our anniversary, so I had a strong inkling it might happen then. While packing, Redli grabbed his tripod, something I’ve seen him use zero times since we’ve been together. He saw me eyeing it and said, “in case I catch a big fish”… this was my first clue. As he packed he called out, “Jen, should a bring a new white T.” A clean white T for camping? The dirtiest of activities? This was my second clue. We drove upstate and rented a boat to camp on an island at lake George. Our first boat ride was gorgeous! Wind in our hair, we were excited and living it up. And what did we do? We went for a boat ride, end of event. We found our little island and set up camp. Views were immaculate, weather 70 and sunny, gorgeous. So what happened next? We just enjoyed the view. A little while later, Redli said, “let’s go for a sunset cruise.” Facing away from him at the time, I got a huge grin on my face, “ya, let’s”. I fixed my tangly, windblown hair and hopped on the boat. And what did we do? We went on a sunset cruise. Was it fun and beautiful? Yes. Were any big questions popped? No. After dinner and a fire, it started to rain. And continued to rain for 24 hours. The next day we had a rainy breakfast by the fire, played some games, boated around, and even took a swim. Then we napped in the tent for a break from the rain. Finally, Redli said we should seize the day, and suggested fishing by the dock. He got up first, walked over to the table, and as I’m crawling out of the tent I see him walk down to the dock holding not only his fishing pole, but also the tripod! To film his fishing? I think not. I try to fix my hair, I can’t at this point. I’m wearing his hoodie because my clothes are soaked. I don’t care. I skip down to the dock (in a chill way), I see the tripod set up “sneakily” on a few rocks. This was my third clue. Redli asked me to hold the fishing pole for a minute, I casually look away while pretending to fish, because again, I’m so chill. A few minutes later, I’m still just holding a fishing pole! Abruptly he says, “let’s just go for a boat ride, should we bring wine?” Yes, obviously! He “sneakily” packs up the tripod, and we’re off, cruising through the choppiest of waters. I drive, (in hindsight very fast). We have the whole lake to ourselves. Redli again asks me to fish, so I pretend to. A few moments later he’s down on one knee in his less than white T and asks me to marry him! It was the sweetest and best moment! We shed a few happy tears, sipped some wine, and compared notes on the play by plays leading up to this moment! The next morning the sun came out. The lake was packed. Turns out maybe the rain was meant for us, will never forget feeling like we had the whole lake to ourselves. Redli, any follow up comments? Ya actually, I do. I had tried to propose a few times before this. I carried the ring on a 40 mile bike ride through all 5 boroughs in nyc, but it rained the whole time and Jen was freezing at the end so didn’t feel like the moment. I thought about proposing a few other times, but nothing felt as right as the camping trip. Earlier on the camping trip when we went swimming in the rain I actually brought the ring into the lake (tied to my bathing suit!), but Jen was again, freezing, so I just couldn’t. I also realized once we were on the sunset cruise it would’ve been great, but I had left the ring at the campsite. Then, on the dock with the tripod set up, I actually got down on one knee but she just never turned around! Anyway, it all worked out great and I can't wait to marry her!
