Where to Stay in Havana

The Wedding Website of June Kim and Jason Lu
We recommend you stay at a Casa Particular reserved through AirBnB. Casas are a really lucrative and competitive business for Cubans. They will help you arrange airport pickup, make reservations, and arrange cab rides while you are in Cuba. We have found Cuban hosts are more eager and hospitable than those in other countries. They are really hands on in a good way (Most of the hosts do not stay at the apartment but they come back to the apartment every morning to clean). Most of them are really cute and well kept. We found that you will really get an authentic Cuban experience staying at an AirBnB and be able to take advantage of the balconies overlooking busy Havana streets or the ocean. Since they are all private, staying at a Casa is a good way to prove you are supporting the Cuban people. While you can arrange a Casa outside of AirBnB, we've found it to be much more convenient to use the service as it's one of the few things you can pay for before getting to Cuba.

House Or Rental

Old Havana

We recommend Old Havana if you want to walk around and be right in the middle of the action. Please read your reviews before you book. This area is where Jason and I stayed both times we have been to Havana. You will find lots of places to stay in Old Havana. It might be a bit pricier or older than the apartments you will find in Vedado, but you will be right in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the city.

House Or Rental

Vedado

A lot of bloggers recommend you stay in this area, and this is where we will be staying. I think this is a more residential and wealthier neighborhood than compared to Old Havana. It's a thirty minute walk away from Old Havana so you will likely have to arrange a cab ride to go to Old Havana for about 5-10 CUC (5-10 dollars). You will find nicer AirBNB for cheaper in this area. Most of the places will have ocean views as well.

Hotel

No National Hotel Chains

If you must stay at hotels, PLEASE stay in places listed below. Anywhere else is government affiliated which means (if you are an American citizen), the US government will likely flag something on the record. OLD HAVANA - Iberostar Parque Central (5 start) - Sevilla Hotel - Inglaterra Hotel VEDADO - Melia Habana Libre (5 start) - Melia Cohiba (5 start) - NH Capri (5 start) - Nacional Hotel (5 start) - Presidente Hotel
