At the time Jason and I met, I was taking an extra technology class for my Master's program. My "Genius Hour" assignment was to do something new and report on it. I signed up for e-harmony because the company had a free trial for the first week of January. On the website, I met Jason. We were matched because we had similar interests and values. I quickly learned I wanted to stay in touch with him. He was writing to me weekly and I wrote back. It was nice getting to know him. Jason had a way of caring and reassuring me, “I got this” that I truly appreciated. I was eager to meet this Grey Eagle man who loved dogs, served in the Air Force and worked on semi-trucks. He loved cook especially on his grill. He told me about his adventures on his grandparents' farm growing up. One day, he gave me his phone number. I stayed up late to talk to him. Our first date, we really connected. We would keep in touch. When we met again, I knew he was the man that made my soul happy.
Jess and I met online. I was happy to hear Jess loved the outdoors. She told me about her family and that she was recently was in a car accident. At the time, I was ice fishing on the weekends and waiting for a good Minnesota Winter to go snowmobiling. It was easy to talk to Jess. She was outgoing and funny. She told me about her Master's classes. I told her about my National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) meetings. We laughed about getting AARP mailings for our birthdays. After a month of communicating through email, I gave her my phone number. She realized I love to talk on the phone. I realized working evenings, Jess had to stay up late to do our evening call. With every email and every call, Jess would bring a smile to my face. We made a plan to meet. She wore a black dress and she was the same person, I got to know online. She was interesting, I wanted to keep seeing her.
We were excited to get away for the long MEA (Minnesota Education Association) weekend. Jason planned the whole thing. We stayed at Hanging Horn Lodge, nestled near Mooselake, the lodge offered a historic chapel, trails, and nice view of the lake. Jason and I braved a cold 25 degree morning walk to the chapel hand in hand. The ground dusted with snow, thanks to the previous night North winds, it was a walk to remember. After a warm breakfast, we would head to Jay Cooke State Park. Jason and I stopped at the Ranger Station to buy a new park sticker. Jason and I have visited at least 35 state parks together. Oddly, Jay Cooke Park has been our most visited. The cold did not stop others from enjoying the day. The swinging bridge was packed with people and pets. Jason led me down a quieter river trail. He helped me onto a private rock ledge, where he shared loving words as he dropped to a knee to ask me to marry him. The ring was gorgeous! Jess said, YES!
