How We Got Here

It was June 2012, at the Pine Brook Country Club in Newton. For Jason, it was just another job site, just another event. For Carolyn, it was her first set up as an intern. Jason was unloading pillows and cushions from the back of the rental truck, and handing them to Carolyn down below. "What was your name again?" he asked, extending his hand, still wearing moving gloves. "Carolyn." she answered, and reached back. "I'm Jay." They went along with the rest of the day - Jay, fluffing the blue drapes, Carolyn untangling crystal strings. Once Carolyn wasn't an intern anymore, she was invited to hang out with Jay and the rest of the gang. They continued setting up and striking events together for nearly 2 years. The more paper lanterns they fiddled with, and the more carnation balls they juggled, the deeper a connection was formed. But even after they both left that job and moved on to other adventures, the connection remained - and strengthened further. They started traveling together - San Francisco, Washington DC, Texas. They moved in together, and discovered their mutual love for gardening and mutual hatred for loud neighbors. Carolyn still thinks back to that day at the Pine Brook Country Club. Someone had said to her, "Do you know how hard it is to find a man who knows how to fluff drape?" while gesturing to Jason. "When you find one, you keep him." That's exactly what she intends to do.

Making it Official

Carolyn went to Ireland with the intention of buying herself a Claddagh ring. Jason went to Ireland with the intention of proposing to Carolyn with the Claddagh ring he already had. Every day Carolyn would say, "we need to go shopping to buy a ring!" and Jason would have to answer, "maybe we'll find a place tomorrow..." as he tried to figure out where he wanted to pop the question. On their drive from Killarney to Galway, Jason found the spot - a quiet, beautiful field, with nobody around. He got out of the car and asked Carolyn to join him. Carolyn, however, was keeping an eye on the clock and thinking they would be late to their next destination. So she refused to get out of the car. And Jason had to rethink his plan. Finally in Galway, their last city of the trip, they spent a whole day walking around shopping. Carolyn, picky as ever, couldn't find anything. "We can come back and do some more looking around before we leave." Jason told her. Tomorrow was their last full day, and Carolyn was absolutely going to buy a ring - so he knew he had to ask before that happened. It had been a long day, so they decided to relax at their hotel for the night - an 18th century castle, in a huge room with a picture window overlooking a falconry field. They bought a bottle of wine (and some guacamole), and enjoyed the view. "Do you want to go walk around and see the grounds?" Jason asked. "No, I'm fine." Carolyn responded. They kept sipping wine and eating guacamole. "Are you sure you don't want to go check out the gazebo or the gardens?" "No, there's wine and guacamole here, I'm good." "So...we're not going to go anywhere? You don't want to go get dinner or walk around at all?" "No I'm fine right here! Why, do you REALLY want to go someplace else?" "Well, it depends - do you want me to propose here or somewhere nicer?" Jason dropped to one knee, fidgeting with the matchbox he had the ring in. Carolyn finally took her attention off the wine and guacamole, and said yes.
