For nearly 27 years, we lived our lives in parallel: early days defined by being the oldest of three kids; childhoods plagued by a phobia of fireworks, to the chagrin of our parents; middle school evenings spent composing songs about historical events for extra credit; high school weekends running track and volunteering for Special Olympics tournaments; college afternoons singing in gospel choir; and post-college years spent volunteering in South Africa. At one point, just a few months apart, we even stayed at the same hostel in Cape Town! In December 2017, just a few days after Christmas, an app called Coffee Meets Bagel connected us, and within a few weeks, we were already joking about what our wedding would look like. From weekends in Carmel to road trips across Lesotho and South Africa, and from the self-doubt of PhD life to the quiet anxieties of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have knit together a life built on trust, faith, peace, and dad jokes – so many dad jokes. We got engaged on our third dating anniversary: January 23, 2021, or 1/23/21 for those of you as tickled by number play as we are. Michael planned an elaborate proposal that took us to our favorite beach (Bonny Doon) and to the site of our first date (the Stanford Arizona Cactus Garden). Several of our friends showed up in person and over Zoom to celebrate with us, and our bridesmaid Elizabeth Davis took the beautiful photograph you see at the top of this page. As we look ahead to our wedding date, we thank God for all the people who have walked beside us, encouraged us, gone on double-dates with us, laughed with us, and nurtured our love. We are because you are, and we are so excited to celebrate this milestone with you.
