Their purpose is not only to witness the marriage but also to advise the couple through their married life. The padrinos de velacion bring a "Lazo". This is a double wedding rosary that is placed on the shoulders of the couple during the ceremony to bless and bind the marriage.

Padrinos de arras will sponsor the Arras. Arras meaning "earnest money" represents the groom's promise to support his wife and family. The bride's acceptance of the arras signifies her trust in his ability to provide. Thirteen gold coins are presented to bestow blessings of prosperity upon the marriage. The thirteen coins also represent the months of the year with an extra coin symbolizing generosity towards those in need.
