The Sikh marriage ceremony is called the Anand Karaj (ceremony of bliss) and it takes place in the Gurdwara (Sikh place of worship) in the presence of the Guru Granth Sahib, the eternal Guru and Sikh sacred scripture. When everyone makes their way inside the gurdwara, the bride and groom sit on the floor next to each other in front of Guru Granth Sahib. The Ragis, or Sikh musicians, begin to recite and sing each verse of the laavan (marriage prayer), signifying the couple to walk around Guru Granth Sahib four times. This practice signifies the importance of a Guru-centered life, as well as a commitment to the Sikh way of life and to working together to help each other realize the Divine Presence. The laavan is the most crucial part of the ceremony that unites the couple together through four verses of scripture and religious messaging. It’s also important because laava means to break away or enter a new stage in life.

For the Anand Karaj (Wedding), the dress code is Semi-Formal / Traditional Attire. Please note that everyone will be seated on the ground for the entirety of the ceremony, so you want to be comfortable and prepared to sit for some time. We recommend attendees wear pants or long dresses if you are not wearing traditional attire. If you are unable to sit on the floor due to a disability, you may sit on the chairs located towards the back of the hall. Also note that the wedding ceremony will take place in a Gurdwara (Sikh place of worship). You will be required to remove your shoes in the shoe room located on the right once you enter the Gurdwara, before proceeding into the other main halls. You will also be required to cover your head while inside the Gurdwara. This may be done with a scarf or a bandana. We will have extra bandanas available for anyone who would like to use one! At the wedding ceremony, there will be breakfast prior to the ceremony, and langar (lunch), served after the ceremony. We will not be serving alcohol at our events but will have a selection of mocktails for you to enjoy!
Prior to the actual wedding, there's a gathering called the Sangeet, where family comes together to sing, dance, and revel in the joy of the upcoming union. Fittingly, sangeet directly translates to "sung together." Typically at sangeets, family members and friends do dance performances in celebration, apply henna to their hands, and celebrate the couple. For our Sangeet, the dress code is Semi-Formal / Traditional Attire.
