Flight

Sonoma County Airport

Flying into Sonoma County Airport is the most convenient option, though not always the cheapest and routes are limited.

Travel Note

Airport Express bus vs Uber/Lyft

If you fly into Oakland (OAK) or San Francisco (SFO) and don't plan on renting a car, there are two options to get you to and from Sonoma County: Uber/Lyft or the Airport Express bus. Don't bother with trains & ferries unless you don't mind a super long journey with lots of transfers. 1) Uber/Lyft - This may be the best option if you are traveling in a party of 2 or more (if you're solo, see option #2). - The cost is typically ~$110-125 each way, but pricing fluctuates. - We have had success getting rides from the airport on demand (ie without scheduling them in advance). However, on the return trip from Sonoma County, we recommend scheduling your ride in advance since rides are more limited in this direction, and there could be long wait times. You can schedule rides for a specific time within the Uber/Lyft app. - Plan for the ride to take 1.5-2 hours, depending on traffic. 2) Sonoma County Airport Express (operated by Groome Transportation) - The bus picks you up directly from the airport and drops you off at one of four locations in Sonoma County: 1) Petaluma Fairgrounds, 2) the Rohnert Park DoubleTree Hotel, 3) the Santa Rosa Park & Ride, and 4) the Sonoma County Airport. Figure out which stop is closest to where you'll be staying- you'll tell the driver as you're boarding. - At SFO the waiting area is called "Airporters". Look for people waiting for buses or ask an airport employee. Make sure you board the bus marked Sonoma County. - Advance reservations are not required, and there are no assigned seats. You can buy your ticket on your smartphone any time before the bus stops at Petaluma Fairgrounds, where an attendant will board the bus and take your ticket. If you haven't purchased one by then, you can buy one from the attendant. - Although space is technically limited, we have never heard of the bus filling up. - Buses come hourly (or less frequently during off-peak hours). Plan ahead by checking the schedule online (see link above).
