Remember the Alamo? An important battle in Texas History where a small group of Texans were fighting for independence from Mexico that were defeated by Mexican General Santa Anna. You can still visit the Alamo Mission where the battle took place, and are steps away from the San Antonio riverwalk that has lots of shops, restaurants and boats you can ride on the river. Caution is a major tourist attraction, but is a right of passage to visit amongst Texans :)

Gruene is a historic Texas town that is well worth the visit! World famous Gruene Hall, built in 1878 bills itself as "the oldest continually run dance hall in Texas" where many music legends have performed over the years and you can enjoy a fun-filled night of dancing. There are many antique shops, shops, fishing and tubing if the weather is warm enough. Recommend grabbing food at the Gristmill, located under the water tower the restaurant resides in the ruins of an 1878 cotton gin, overlooking the Guadalupe river with cliffside views.
