Waiheke Island

Waiheke is a large island (population 8,000) located just a 40 minute ferry ride from the downtown Auckland ferry terminal. The island consists mostly of vineyards and wineries and has many stunning beaches and great restaurants. The ferries between Auckland and Waiheke Island depart every half hour, starting at 6:00am and going until Midnight each day. Once you arrive on the island, transportation is done by bus or local taxi company. There is no Uber or Lift operating on the island. Taxis we’ve used previously: We recommend purchasing the Fullers 360 bus pass, which allows you to hop on and off the bus as much as you like all day long while on the island. Many of the best vineyards, beaches, and restaurants are along the central bus route. Fullers 360 operates the ferry too. Costume attire is appropriate, comfy shoes, and you will be walking on a tour for a few hours.
The day of the wedding you’ll be treated to a private tour of the Hobbiton film set and an epic reception party at the Green Dragon Inn featuring some killer DJs. We will arrange buses to pick you up from your motel and drop you off at Hobbiton. A bus will take you back to your motel after the wedding. Remember, please dress in a fantasy costume. At a minimum, some elf ears =)

The day after the wedding, we will board the buses to head back to Auckland. On the way, we’ll stop at the world famous Waitomo Caves to explore the underground waterfalls and bio luminescent glow worms. The nature area has multiple caves, and we’ll each get to attend two: Waitomo Glowworm Cave and the Ruakuri Cave. These two cave tours are complimentary! =) No actionable next steps for now, other than to dress in comfortable sneakers and pants. It gets somewhat cold in the caves, so a long sleeve shirt or light jacket would be good to bring. It’s recommended you check back into the Quest Ponsonby upon returning on the evening of Monday, Feb 17.
