James proposed on their 2 year anniversary in Newport, RI. They'd spend the entire day just enjoying being together, driving from Providence to Newport, hiking at Seal Point and rock hopping at Beavertail State Park. Once they arrived in Newport and had checked into The Chanler at Cliff Walk, James insisted they go for a walk before getting ready for their dinner reservations. So off they went in the rain and fog, down the Newport Cliffwalk. As they walked, they passed sign after sign stating: "Stay on the paved path. Steep cliffs. High risk of injury," with a cartoonishly dramatic figure falling off the side of the cliffs. After about a mile of this, they'd reached "The 40 Steps" and went to the bottom to look out over the roiling sea. James waited until all the other tourists left and then insisted that they go out onto the bare cliff face. Emily didn't want to, as it was raining and the rocks would be slippery. All she could see were those warning signs that they'd passed on the way there. But James insisted and took her hand leading her out onto the farthest most rock. He kept her hands in his, while he told her how much he loved her and how much he wanted a future with her. And when James went to his knee, Emily burst into tears. She was nodding and telling him, "Yes, of course," all while quickly pulling him to his feet, telling him to be careful and not to slip. Many smiles, kisses and phone calls to family followed.
