Jamie Scott Davis and Samantha Marie Hardenburgh met for the first time at study tables at the Delta Zeta House, at GVSU, where they both attended college (like for a long...long time). Despite having crushes on each other, the stars didn't align...until two decades later.
In January 2020, Jamie reached out to congratulate Sam on an award she'd won, and that started lots of texting back and forth, which led to late night conversations on the phone. Finally they went on a date to see if there was still a spark after all these years. Turns out - there was. What they didn't know, was that the world was about to shut down. They weathered the storm of the pandemic together, watching movies, playing board games, and learning to cook. They've been inseparable ever since. Jamie asked Sam to be his girlfriend on February 29th of 2020, and later that August they moved in together, in Jamie's house in Lansing.
Jamie and Sam returned to Grand Valley for Homecoming in October 2021, to walk around the beautiful campus (something they've done quite a few times). What Sam didn't know is this time would be very different. They began to walk through the Arboretum and an older couple followed behind. They struck up a conversation and they said they'd also met at GVSU and got married on campus 37 years before. They were ADORABLE. Sam gave them directions to find their old ceremony site on campus, and they left the Arboretum. Jamie & Sam stopped at a bench to sit, and Jamie pulled out a crème brulee macaron (Sam's favorite), to which she replied "Wait - you brought SNACKS? Amazing!" Jamie was using this as a diversion to get the ring situated...classic misdirection. As Sam got up to keep walking she turned back to see Jamie on one knee with a beautiful ring and huge smile on his face. He said many sweet things, and asked her a question, and of course she said yes. Later that day, Jamie & Sam learned that sweet older couple was at a class reunion and telling people the story of how J&S helped them find their wedding site. So Jamie & Sam had to go in and tell them about how our day had changed significantly changed for the better since they saw them. There were lots of hugs and cheers all around. Jamie & Sam drove back to Lansing, got changed into some snazzy clothes and had a fantastic dinner at Capital Prime. Sam got a steak as big as her head that made Jamie jealous, and they toasted to their next big step!
