If you're a history buff (aka nerd) you may enjoy the Iowa State Capitol Building, where Jamie used to roam the historic marble halls and opulent galleries and ponder his future. Seriously, though, this is one of the most beautiful State Capitol buildings in the Union and features lots of cool treasures, such as preserved Iowa Regimental Civil War flags, an enormous gold leaf dome, and the Law Library which rivals Belle's in Beauty and the Beast.
Brunch is always a good idea. Drive west to visit Jean's favorite brunch place, possibly ever (controversial statement, we know). Most of the menu is under $8 and they have carts full of danishes, croissants, and rolls. Beware of long wait!
Cute instagram-worthy park with oversized sculptures. Free!
If you're looking for that special souvenir from your one trip to Iowa, this hip Iowa-themed store is a local favorite. Raygun is full of cool gifts, political activist apparel, and T-shirts featuring witty humor such as "Des Moines: French for 'the Moines.'" Raygun also has cool home accessories including beer glasses, mugs, and coasters featuring Des Moines themed slogans, cute cat paraphernalia, and Raygun's iconic laser gun logo. A really fun store to browse!
Jean believes in the "walk and talk" method when catching up with friends. Grab a coffee at their downstairs café before wandering floors and floors of well, salvaged architecture.
One time, Jean watched Jamie eat a burger here that had grilled cheese sandwiches for buns. "10/10 would order this again," said Jamie.
